Here is my latest story for your scrutiny. I would love to know your opinion. Plus I was wondering if you could give me some suggestions for the title, it would be very helpful. Thanks.

Due to a difference of opinions between the USA and Great Britain regarding sensitive issues their friendship is stretched. Continued terrorist actions, causes public opinion in the mid 21st century to indicate that they want the United Nations to have more powers. During a heated summit, the United Nations are given higher powers and access to military resourses. As a result, many nations cancel their membership with the United Nations such as the United Kingdom, Europe and several middle eastern nations. Great Britain form their own empire called the Britannia Federation with its own ideals, while the European Union is standardised further.

Early in the 22nd century a man claims to be a god sent from heaven. With wild ideas, great knowledge and radical beliefs, he amasses a large following throughout the middle east and spreading in to some parts of Asia. He preaches a religion called Ilum, which is very similar to some popular middle eastern religions. Soon enough, the man unites the middle eastern nations and forms an empire called the Ilum Believers.

In the early 23rd century, an atmospheric phenomenon caused by pollution levels forms a storm that envelopes most of Earth for many days. From this point forth, Earth's atmosphere begins to degrade as poisonous gasses in the air begin increasing. Several terrestrial worlds had long ago been discovered using powerful orbital telescopes. The Britannia Federation announces a plan to send ten million colonists to the terrestrial planet orbiting Eta Cassiopeiae using an engine capable of reaching speeds of up to 25% of the speed of light. As the other major powers of Earth realise their world's destruction is near, they have a meeting in San Diego called the San Diego Summit. During the meeting, the terrestrial planets available to each major power is identified. Each world power begins construction of their own colony ship. Not long after the Britannia Federation's cryoship leaves Earth with an upgrade of fifty million people, an even more powerful engine is made capable of reaching 35% of the speed of light. As the major factions of Earth receive or gather the details to build the engine they each begin a 'race' to be the first to make it to their new world.

The major factions are the coalition forces of the Britannia Federation (England, France, Ireland, Norway, Brazil, South Africa, Netherlands and others), the new reformed United Nations (USA, Russia, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ukraine, Singapore and others), the enhanced European Union (Germany, Italy, Greece, Spain, Austria, Hungary, Portugal, Belgium, Mexico and others) and the united Asian Empire (China, Japan, United Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Mongolia and others), plus the Ilum Believers (Iraq, Indonesia, Pakistan, India, Iran, Saudi Arabia, North African Cooperation, Egypt and others), not to mention the smaller separatist group from the Asian Empire called the Nung Supporters.

All major powers except for the Ilum Believers send their cryoshops. Shortly after, a furious battle begins between the Ilum Believers and the AE/UN Alliance. In the middle of the war, a mining accident occurs on a Britannia transport taking deuterium supplies from Jupiter Station to Earth and a subspace distortion is discovered. The Federation releases their details and a long study begins. Despite the use of several atomic weapons launched by the Ilum Believers, the Alliance is victorious with help from the Britannia Federation and support from the European Union. Earth's atmosphere continues to degrade and is accelerated due to the atomic detonations.

A decade after the study began, the joint investigation team releases their data regarding the subspace phenomenon. They discover that there is a vast subspace network connecting most stars throughout the universe. Using the correct harmonic frequencies a vessel can use this network for interstellar travel. The data is transmitted to each of the cryoships and experiments begin. Suddenly the restricted Ilum Believers mount a massive surprise offensive and the remaining nations of Earth are forced to surrender. The Ilum assimilate the subspace technology and with all of Earth's remaining resources at their disposal, they travel to the Delta Pavonis system using the subspace network. They leave Earth and the remaining inhabitants behind to their own doom.

Faction Details

United Nations
Government: Democracy. Similar to that of the USA/Australia. However, government control is much more powerful.
Civilisation Type: Consumers.
Ships: Expensive vessels using the best new technology. However, there is not a large population of ships because of their expense.

Britannia Federation
Government: Monarchy.
Civilisation Type: Commerse based.
Ships: Bulky, slow, heavily armored vessels. Cargo space and function is very high.

Asian Empire
Goverment: Imperial.
Civilisation Type: Clans and Communities with high emphasis on honour.
Ships: Two types. Very large community ships which house thousands of people and go from place to place providing services. Smaller ships are highly manauverable and fast, but lightly armored.

European Union
Government: Republic. Most issues are debated in a Senate.
Civilisation: Beaurocratic. Everything has to have a 'permission slip'.
Ships: The use of AI drones are commonly used for military purposes. Piloted ships are evenly balanced.

Ilum Believers
Goverment: Dictatorship. Ruled by religous fear.
Civilisation: Religous.
Ships: All ships are combat capable. High number of military vessels. The use of weapons of mass destruction is not uncommon.

I hope you don't think this is derivative of Freelancer, because I created this story long before I heard of the game. I wanted to create a science fiction story, that just involved humans in space rather than humans and aliens. In Star Trek the aliens are just exagerated versions of parts of humanity. I wanted to explore humanity without the aliens. Well... There will be aliens, but not for the most-part of the story. I value all of your opinions and suggestions, positive or negative. Thanks.

Here's my details on subspace that will be used in all of my stories. You see, in real life, there is no way we can travel faster than the speed of light or create artificial blackholes and wormholes or any sort of warp/slipstream/hyperspace drives. So my idea of interstellar travel is that perhaps there's an undiscovered way to travel to the stars. A natural phenomenon that we can use. And this is what I've come up with:

Article 1: Subspace

Section 1: Subspace Basics

Section 2: Subspace Fractures (Subspace Apertures, Subspace Conduits, Subspace Rips):

Subspace exists as an alternate layer to the normal space-time continuum of the universe. The mass of gravitational force of an object directly influences the subspace density of the area. Massive objects such as stars create a subspace density that allows a connection to be made linking with other stars dependent upon its mass, forming a subspace network. Due to the imperfect nature of the relationship between normal space-time and subspace, several instabilities exist. A subspace fracture is an aperture from subspace into normal space along a subspace conduit. Each conduit contains several thousands of fractures along its shaft, while most of these fractures exist toward the base of the massive object.
Certain substances such as deuterium react with subspace and if used correctly with a specific harmonic frequency can create a stable aperture into a subspace conduit. When in subspace or a subspace conduit, no scans can be made into normal space-time. Immediate scans of a conduit can determine its density and direction, which is used for navigation purposes. As explained in the subspace pulsation theory, these fractures can magnetically flare up from time to time. It is at this point that a conduit can be discovered.

Section 3: Subspace Corridors (Planetary Shipping Lanes):

A subspace corridor is a scaled down version of a subspace conduit. These corridors exist in planetary systems and are continuously modified by the orbits of each planet in the system. The corridors are connected to each planet in the system that is larger than approximately 1,000 kilometres in radius. Once a subspace array is activated inside a subspace corridor, all the particles within its range are hyper-accellerated and the energy required to achieve high velocities is reduced. A high velocity is easily maintained in a subspace corridor

Section 4: Subspace Pulsation Theory

The Subspace Pulsation Theory provides evidence of subspace and subspace conduits. A layer of subspace that lies closest to normal space-time called the Cuticle is at a constant state of flux causing it to continuously pulsate. Strong gravimetric changes and distortions in a star can often disrupt the fabric of a subspace cuticle near the boundary of a conduit causing it to flare up from time to time. These subspace conduit flares can be detected with the proper equipment scanning for them and is the primary method for discovering new Subspace Fractures leading to new systems. However, the flares occur only every couple of years depending upon the stability of the stellar mass.
Another theory that is already being investigated is a device that can artificially create a microflare of a conduit within its range, enough to be detected by normal scanning equipment. This device could send out a certain harmonic frequency that would inhibit the gravitational effect onto normal space for a matter of nanoseconds, which is enough to create a partial shockwave in subspace as the gravitation effect re-establishes itself causing a microflare to erupt from all conduits in range. Several prototypes of this Subspace Gravimetric Inhibitor have already been tested, but all with failed results.

Section 5: Subspace Reaction
    Subsection A: Deuterium

If directed into a specific part of a subspace fracture, pure deuterium can react with subspace creating an aperture to form in the region connecting normal space to subspace. An aperture forms at varying sizes depending upon the spread of deuterium. The length at which an aperture remains open is dependent on the quantity of deuterium.

    Subsection B: Harmonic Frequencies

If an object is positioned in the 'window' of a Subspace Fracture after a stable aperture has been activated (look at Section 5:Subsection A) and if that object was resonating a certain harmonic frequency, then the object will then be consumed by the Subspace Conduit. The object will then be pushed away from the closest gravitation force (or, away from the closest star - toward the farthest connecting star). To return to normal space, the resonator will have to create an absolute anti-frequency and the object will then exit the nearest Subspace Fracture.
As long as either the correct frequency or anti-frequency is being made, then the object will remain intact. If it is not constantly applied, then the object will dematerialise. Nothing on record has ever returned from dematerialisation, so it is presumed that the object is terminated. If an anti-frequency is not applied, the object will violently exit the largest Subspace Fracture at the end of a conduit. Most conduits in multiple star systems have safe end-points comparable to single star systems where the end-point of a conduit lies within the star itself.

Section 6: Subspace Travel Versatility

The primary usage for Subspace would certainly be its fast travel qualities. Depending on the number of vibrations per second of the Harmonic Resonator will directly influence the speed at which a vessel will move through a subspace conduit.

Hmmm, good overall plot so far. The only problems I see with it are the grouping of countries. Given the current cultural differences Ireland would never submit to British rule due to the fact that a large portion of british hate Irish people (we are commonly referred to as 'micks' and the general consensus is that we are stupid) the french are unlikely to make any kind of concrete alliance with britian also due to major cultural differences.

An alliance between Japan and China is highly unlikely, China really won't see eye to eye with any of the capatilist asian countries.

The current world alliances are more likely to stay with the possible exception of the USA and the UK which are likely to join forces.


BTW the british thing isn't a rant on my part, due to the culture in our countries there is a lot of bad history between certain extremist groups.

China and Russia i can see...but China and Japan?  they'll be bitter with each other for the next gazillion years, especially on China's side (mainly due to the war crimes commited during WWII against the civilian population).

I guess I can put France in the EU, but what about Ireland? Hmmm... I could put them with the UN... Or even make them a neutral state. Any suggestions. Perhaps I could put Russia with China and Japan with the UN... A fair swap I suppose... But I really wanted Russia and the USA to align. Plus I wanted at least 95% of the Asian Empire to be asian (I'm not counting Russians as asian, even though Russia is on the Asian continent). Any suggestions?

I was also thinking of renaming the Asian Empire. I didn't want to force any particular race of humans into the factions, so I'll have to remove that... Any suggestions? Another thing, should Australia be with the Britannia Federation or the United Nations? Currently Australia is in the Commonwealth and under the 'Queen's Rule' (we're not a republic yet, but will be sometime this decade or next). However, our lifestyle is much more similar with the US. I think I'm going to stick with them being in the UN... But any suggestions are more than welcome.

Over the past month, I've been making a 2D real map of all the stars around Sol - out to 30 LY's. I'm putting together their exact positions (in 2D - it's not too bad - just difficult) so that I can make a real looking network. I'm trying to make this story as politically and as scientifically correct as I can.

For example, I'm analysing all the surrounding stars around Sol and choosing which will be able to host a terrestrial world. There's actually only really about 10 candidates/possibilities - not as many as I would have thought. I've narrowed it down to just 6 in a 30LY radius, because not every one would have a terrestrial world... What are the chances...

Also, it's pretty much scientifically impossible to do any of the science fiction interstellar drives, so I've proposed a natural phenomenon that we don't know about that will be available.

I have also written the setting to my main story Silent Threat, which I submitted here about 6 months ago, but it wasn't received very well. Everyone thought it was a bit too cliched and derived. But I'll see if I can find it on the boards to see what you think... There's a lot more in detail in Silent Threat though...

Ireland is pretty neutral in world affairs but if it came to some kind of alliance Ireland would most likely ally with the rest of the european union, given the number of 'Irish americans' though it is possible that Ireland could join the UN.

Japan would most likely join with the UN as it has more in common with america.


The UN would be pretty much any country that wishes to maintain power whilst keeping it's own unique culture - sortof vague but I think it makes sense.

Oh yeah, and you might wanna factor location into this. A nation without a single power base of contiguous united areas is a dead nation. Meaning that you'd better split it up more regionwise than you are. It's one thing to have an Oceania constituting the U.S., Britain, and Australia. They're divided by oceans, but if you look at their positions on a map you can see how they could connect without someone chopping off trade routes (at least, without massive effort involved) or simply practicing divide and conquer with the division already done. It's quite another thing to have the U.S. and Russia, or Britain, the Netherlands, and Brazil (and South America, which somehow does not include Brazil). An opposing European nation could cut off most any supply route for either of these (particularly the U.S.-Russia one, which would also be vulnerable to Asian opponents. Russia's practically surrounded in your plan).

I think I understand what you're saying... But when most of these mergers take place, we're at the beginning of the 22nd century. By then, we have sufficient radiation shields and low-energy Earth-to-orbit capabilities (perhaps even a space elevator) that allows us to have an active role in space, well at least the Sol system. Everyone is vulnerable to orbital attacks. Plus most major factions are aligned. It's just the Ilum Believers that are hostile (well, not much at the beginning). There's conflict, just not anything near war. Until later anyway... Thanks for your help.

Please tell me that you are joking... please tell me that you are joking...

You have no freakin' idea that Taiwan is "Free China?" The US recognized Taiwan as China due to it's being the Chinese government in exile up until the Nixon days.

Taiwan does openly trade with China, yet the Chinese are officially still at war with them for being a "rogue state." (strange bedfellows, eh?)
