Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford will be resuming their roles for the new Star Wars movie.

This basically suggests that it WILL be set after RotJ, I'm assuming they are playing their original (though older) characters and the story will revolve around their children.

This bodes... interesting, whilst it has no influence on the quality of the movie, it does at least suggest that whoever is steering this has some concept of what was wrong with the previous movies.

Star Wars VII is set 30 years after Return of the Jedi (which neatly matches up with how old the actors have gotten).

Lucas always intended episodes VII-IX to be set after RotJ.  Hence, you know, the numbers VII through IX.

Yes, but his mistake was making the prequels, no-one's really interested in how the bad guys got to rule the Galaxy in Star Wars.

This is as much (and more likely considerably more) supposition than what I said.  Lucas has spoken of the rest of the Star Wars movies repeatedly in terms of a nine-movie arc where the original releases were the middle segment.  The substance of my post is essentially "We already knew this".

It was being called Star Wars VII before anything was known about it other than the fact it was being made after Lucas sold the rights to the movies. People wanted it to continue along Lucas' planned path, but before that was confirmed, it was still being called Star Wars VII.

Honestly, I thought people would enjoy this little snippet of information and be pleased to see these roles revived, instead I get condescension.

Not that I've even read them yet myself, but I do wish that these movies were basically the Thrawn Trilogy, instead of whatever they're going to be doing with them.

Not that I've even read them yet myself, but I do wish that these movies were basically the Thrawn Trilogy, instead of whatever they're going to be doing with them.

Obvious problem there would be that the Thrawn Trilogy takes place a lot closer to RotJ than these movies are going to. If they wanted to use the original actors at a time that made sense, they would've had to film the Thrawn Trilogy closer to... 1990, I think? Obviously, since the Thrawn Trilogy was published after that point...

I think Lucas scrapped the idea of doing of nine movies when they decided to wrap everything up with RotJ. We are now firmly in "stuff he may have scribbled on the back of a cocktail napkin at some point maybe" territory. Very Space Balls 2: the Search for More Money.

Unless Luke becomes the new Vader or something I'm not convinced there is any room for a Star Wars movie that flows naturally from RotJ, let alone three of them.

The only Disney canon is the 6 films and Clone Wars TV series.

So I wouldn't be worried about Thrawn, Mara Jade... etc.
