I'm still EU loyal.
Doesn't matter what the press says. Doesn't matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn't matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world — "No, you move." - Captain America

Having read 99% of the EU I can confidently say it is 99% garbage that rarely if ever understood what made Star Wars interesting. Even the beloved Rogue Squadron books were, well -

Traitor and Shatterpoint were pretty legit though.

I wouldn't call the Rogue Squadron entries in the X-Wing series "beloved"... more like "tolerated." Now, Allston's Wraith Squadron books, and Starfighters of Adumar...

I don't think most of the things that made SW great work particularly well in non-movie media. I mean it has shooting and flying and all which are neat for video games, but at its heart SW is really pure movie. Its lifeblood is editing and music and cheese.
Also WHERE IS LANDO?

Never mind that.

Re: Original Star Wars cast to appear in new movie...
Lucas always intended episodes VII-IX to be set after RotJ.  Hence, you know, the numbers VII through IX.

After I - III who gives a **** what he intended to do? :p

Episode VII - Calling for money
Episode VIII - The parents strike back
Episode VIIII - Return of the phone call

Episode X will have to do with these dead beats training as jedi in their cardboard academy in some dirty alley. Their kids obviously become broke, homeless, and crazy.

There will be no Episode X. Instead there will be a gritty reboot.

To be honest I'm hugely surprised they haven't tried that already. A Star Wars reboot could consist of an hour and a half of Vader taking a dump on a space toilet and STILL make a fortune.

Re: Original Star Wars cast to appear in new movie...
The prospect of a reboot sounds just as bad as it is great. It is old and has never been rebooted. This reboot in my own taste would have more underpinnings of the technology in star wars explained (but, i don't think a reboot would be fun and save it like the star trek reboot). Episodes 1-3 were terrible at ending up in random locations with bull**** technology that largely didn't make sense just for a scene. The whole battle with darth maul; wtf was the point of that place with the pink force fields? Hmmm, this is convenient; no **** lucas. The de-limbing of anakin, that whole fight of ridiculous bull**** on the lava planet was great until they went outside and continued fighting on top of droids that i guess don't mind continuing doing their jobs, convenently, the droids had force fields too (god forbid these droids, they might just want to, avoid the lava instead). Yet another perfect lazy scene.

At least in star trek and B5, they actually do go after technology explanation pretty darn often. Whereas star wars doesn't really (unless you read the books, well, there was the movies before the books, i'm ignoring the books because next to nothing explains how stuff in star wars works on screen). I think the only thing that was explained on screen was how the droid army worked in episode 1. Star wars more or less goes after, here's some bull****, and just accept it.

It leaves me wondering why the damn story of star wars takes place in a technologically advanced galactic culture since the technology doesn't matter one ****. You could take the story of star wars, place it on only a single planet, in the medieval age (if you have even half a brain, most people watching a movie in medieval times aren't  going to be thinking "well how does that work?" and what the **** is this supposed to be?"), and still have the story of star wars with some wizards (force substitution) and call it wizard wars for all i care, and still have movies. All ships are substituted with dragons. Now this re-interpretation makes star wars sound even more like a steaming pile of ****. Well, i know that star wars is already a steaming pile of **** from an elephant that could walk up a wall and leave one hell of an inverted pile.

For ****'s sake, you might want to have the technology being the integral core piece of the whole entire setting in a scifi fantasy setting. At least star wars isn't anywhere near as bad as age of the dragons. At least that smelled to high heaven of being in the wrong setting.  Mean while star wars and it's bull****..."it's in the future, who cares, pew pew, flashy special affects, were sheep".

Re: Original Star Wars cast to appear in new movie...
Explaining the technology in Star Wars goes exactly counter to the point of Star Wars.  It's not a hard science fiction setting, it's a fantasy story that just so happens to have spaceships.

Re: Original Star Wars cast to appear in new movie...
The EU got scrapped if folks haven't heard, it's now a separate entity.
The only Disney canon is the 6 films and Clone Wars TV series.

So I wouldn't be worried about Thrawn, Mara Jade... etc.

*cries silently in a corner*

"Scrapping continuity" does not mean that one can not draw from the EU's many ideas, similar to say, a Batman film, can draw from the comic books even though it is not set in the same continuity.

Why yes, i already addressed that. The point of it having star ships, technology beyond our wildest dreams, and a galactic civilization is all meaningless since the technology doesn't matter.

The space setting is pretty critical to SW's visual aesthetic (which is probably its greatest accomplishment IMO), and convincing spaceships were a lot more doable (though still groundbreaking) in 70s moviemaking than dragons.

I think it would have been nearly impossible to blow audiences away visually like SW did with 1977 cartoon animation. Lucas's background was in live action (he was basically riding the wave of good will/greed from the huge success of American Graffiti) , so I dunno if Fox would have backed an animated feature even if he had wanted to do it that way. Anyway, the scale and the detail and the lived-in look would all have been really hard to achieve in a cartoon.
