OT - Footprints, and..... :D
Among Christian circles, at least, there is a very famous and moving poem/mini-story called "Footprints in the Sand":

Quote

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, one belonging to him, and the other belonging to the Lord.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it. "Lord, you said that once I decided to follow You, You'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why, when I needed you most, you would leave me."

The Lord replied "My son. My precious child, I love you and would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."

Just today I heard about a, errr.... different... version to this poem:

Quote

One night I had a wondrous dream,
One set of footprints there were seen,
The footprints of my precious Lord,
But mine were not along the shore.

But then some stranger prints appeared,
And I asked the Lord, "What have we here?
Those prints are large and round and neat,
But Lord, they are too big for feet."

"My child," He said in somber tones,
"For miles I carried you alone.
I challenged you to walk in faith,
But you refused and made me wait."

"You disobeyed, you would not grow,
The walk of faith, you would not know,
So I got tired, I got fed up,
And there I dropped you on your butt."

"Because in life, there comes a time,
When one must fight, and one must climb,
When one must rise and take a stand,
Or leave their butt prints in the sand.

As I'm sure you could guess, it's called "Buttprints in the Sand". :D

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Where's that wakka when I need it?

Oh wait, there it is. :wakka:

Mom had two plaques with the footprints poem on them.
Lost them when the house burned down. :(

But the story's pretty funny there.

It's funny - but it's true, people can be over dependent on religion. The forget how to stand on their own two feet.

Bet heh, nice poem :)

I think it was a commercial for trousers. You know, if you're going through life on your butt your trousers have the tendency to get old real fast :p

It's still about religion in a way then - if you have a religion but no faith in it then what's the point? So you can... go to a church on a sunday and call yourself Christian? Seems like that's utterly avoiding the entire point to me.

And Stealth is right, it is about opinion - but I think I'm correct here. To say that I wasn't would imply that religion is a necessity for every person to get from day to day life - and that isn't true.

it really depends what you mean by religion. if you mean something you believe in, well, most people do need religion to live- they need to believe in themselves, or something, that can support them, encourage them to live.

if you mean organised religion, that's a different matter.

Ja, I agree... the term "religion" is over/mis - used so much that's it's getting to my head. You can't tell if people are trying to say "belief", "belief in god", "belief in your foot", or whatnot.....

(it's like: are you religious?
err.... I believe that I'm here.
nono, I'm asking if you're religious.
well, I believe that I'm made of atoms made from electrons?
well, but are you religious?)  :p
Science alone of all the subjects contains within itself the lesson of the danger of belief in the infallibility of the greatest teachers in the preceding generation . . .Learn from science that you must doubt the experts. As a matter of fact, I can also define science another way: Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts. - Richard Feynman

well I don't have a "belief" in anything, so to speak. :D (I like logic and assume it works in reality, but I do not "believe" in it :p :D)
