FS2 Open Removes Audio
After installing FS2 Open then starting the game via the launcher, I find that there is absolutely no sound in the game save for the computer-generated voices (such as in the tech room). However, this issue does not occur when I run the game without FSO and without the launcher, instead running the game straight from the original exe.

I read the "READ THIS BEFORE POSTING" thread and have attempted to follow the instructions. It stated to check that "Generic Software" is selected in the Audio/Joystick menu of the Launcher. Unfortunately, "Preferred Playback Device" and "Preferred Capture Device" do not possess ANY options to choose from when opening the drop-down list. They are both simply empty.

I have installed the patch and have even re-installed the game twice. I am using the original disk.

I have searched for a solution for some time without success. Any assistance you can provide me on this issue would be most welcome.

Regards

Please post your fs2_open.log file.  Instructions on how to do this can be found in this post.

Re: FS2 Open Removes Audio
Thank you for the reply.

I neglected to mention, I am currently using Windows 7 64bit. However, I installed it into my C:\Games folder.

I followed the instructions to locate the log file as suggested, but I seem to be unable to locate it in the Data folder.

While following the instructions, I was notified to Browse for a Debug build. However, none of the builds I possess seem to resemble those seen in the image. I therefore selected the fs2_open_3_7_2_RC4_NO-SSE-DEBUG Application, assuming that this might simply be some newer version. I then proceeded to save the changes and run the game. I then exited the game after starting it up, as the thread stated that was all I needed to do as the issue is not crashing. I then went to the Data folder and was unable to find anything named fs2_open.log. I did find a file called fs2_open, however, but that seems to lack the "log".

That post is not completely up to date, actually. Debug builds used to be marked with just "d", but now they're marked with "DEBUG". So, the build that you tried is correct.

I then went to the Data folder and was unable to find anything named fs2_open.log. I did find a file called fs2_open, however, but that seems to lack the "log".
That file is fs2_open.log; Windows is just hiding the extension, which it does by default. (If you want Windows to show file extensions, instructions on doing so are here.)

Re: FS2 Open Removes Audio
Many thanks for the corrections.

I have placed the log in an extension in this post. I hope it is satisfactory.

Re: FS2 Open Removes Audio
It looks like you don't have OpenAL installed; as it's the sound API that the engine uses, you won't get any sounds at all without it.

Re: FS2 Open Removes Audio
I followed directions in another thread about using OpenAL to fix what might have been this same issue, but it seems it did not work. Would you be willing to provide me with some instructions of what I need to download and how to implement it exactly?

Many thanks for the replies thus far.

Re: FS2 Open Removes Audio
There are several options for installing OpenAL.  Unfortunately none of the options seem to reliably work for everyone, so you may need to try them all.

1) Install OpenAL Soft

Download from here: http://kcat.strangesoft.net/openal-soft-1.16.0-bin.zip
Extract the zip to a temporary location
Copy openal-soft-1.16.0-bin/bin/Win32/soft_oal.dll to the FSO and wxLauncher\bin folders and rename it OpenAL32.dll

(note: if you're using launcher 5.5g then you don't need to worry about wxLauncher)

If this doesn't work, just delete OpenAL32.dll from your FSO & wxLauncher/bin folders

2) Install Creatives OpenAL

Download this file
Run the installer

3) Install BOTH

If this doesn't work, leave Creatives OpenAL installed and *also* install OpenAL Soft per the directions above; i.e. OpenAL + OpenAL Soft.  If that still doesn't work, let us know and we'll dig further.

Re: FS2 Open Removes Audio
Oh - I thought that would be appropriate for win7 64bit... but I guess that since FSO is 32bit... I'll update my post  :nervous:

Re: FS2 Open Removes Audio
So that we can gather info on what works and what doesn't, could you let me know what you did to make the sound work?  Did you use OpenAL Soft or Creatives OpenAL or Both?

Thanks - that'd be Creative's OpenAL.
