A lot of the time this is due to forgetting to disconnect your modem from the wall socket. Telephone lines are just as capable of carrying the computer killing surge that well... Kills your computer. I usually switch my computer off during a storm but they don't last very long here and we rarely get fork lightning.
Try swapping out some of the components from another computer if you can. You might only need to replace the processor.
