Welcome to "This Week in Kansas".  This one is a doozy.  I'll provide a basic timeline.

Last year: Kansas cuts income taxes to the top earners
This year: Kansas faces record budget shortfall.  No one who understands economics is surprised by this.
Last week: Kansas increases sales tax to make up budget shortfall.  It won't work in time.
This Week: Kansas decides to furlough state employees.  Kansas then declares all state employees to be essential to forestall shutdown.
Monday: Governor Brownback threatens to defund the state judiciary if it rules against him on budget matters.

Result: the state will cease functioning in two or three weeks, and may very well not have a judicial system when that happens.

I get the feeling most right wing politicians don't try to abolish the judicial branch because it gets in the way of their megalomaniacal lust for power.  Sam Brownback is a special exception.

Yeah there's no institution more inherently conservative than the judiciary. This is straight up desperation.

Of course what you didn't mention is that Brownback was just reelected. There's a lot of time for this to get uglier and uglier.

I'm somewhat to the right (overall I'd say I'm a center-right person) of Democrats in the US and I don't care for Brownback.

Right-wing, left-wing, whatever...it doesn't matter. The current, overall system of governance here in America is the political equivalent of letting Jesus take the wheel.

Not at all; I mean that when I read the news, I get the sense that the government has taken its hands off of the wheel.

The problem is when you refuse to look into issues as a voter, it's very easy for people to still find a reason to vote for this guy -.- As soon has he gives any explanation, even a bad one, for what's happened to the state's economy, a lot of people will go "yea ok" and not change views.
