It is pretty much impossible. Which is why it's not going to happen, ever.

If you want to try then go ahead and write Phone FRED, the source code is there.
Good luck.

Re: Is there no possebilytie on phone fredding
It. Is. Not. Going. To. Happen.

Yes, Phones are incredibly powerful these days. Yes, they're way more powerful than anything available to a PC user 6 years ago. They're great.

But.

Porting FSO to Android or iOS or whatever means writing a whole new abstraction layer for the OS. It means rewriting the entire way user input is handled. It means reinterpreting content for use on that platform. It means rewriting our renderer to work with OpenGL ES or whatever Android uses these days. It means a LOT of work.

Remember that we who would do this work are unpaid volunteers. We do this because we like doing it. If someone comes along who wants to do this stuff and is actually capable of doing it, we're not going to block that effort. But for the moment, noone on the SCP team is willing to do this.

So. Get enough developers to support that effort, and then we'll talk again. But right now? It is not going to happen.

Oh, and if porting FSO is difficult, porting FRED is even more so.

It is totally possible to write entire missions in notepad if you familiarise yourself with mission file syntax, but it will be tedious and prone to errors. You won't be able to test it on phone either.

Re: Is there no possebilytie on phone fredding
You are not listening, wouter.

Of course it's not impossible.

It is, however, a LOT of work. Work that will take even a very dedicated person a long time to complete. Work that may not pay off. Work that we cannot support as part of the SCP, unless the people doing it are willing to join up for several years (Just like we cannot support the Pandora port. Or that console port I remember vaguely).

In short, if you want to see this happen, you will need to find one or more developers willing to do it.

EDIT:

I will also note that we've had this discussion twice before. Since then, nothing has changed regarding the SCP's ability to do this.

MOAR EDIT:

you dont need to be rude, im not asking you guys to do anything, i was asking about the problems, so see if they can be workaround, there is a lot of people trying to get native C++ apps to run on Android.

It's not really about being rude.

Basically this is a "if you have to ask, you're not even remotely qualified to do it" sort of thing. Which is why people get so annoyed at the question. The level of your understanding of the problem is so far below the level of anyone qualified to fix it that any answer beyond "It's very difficult to do" is a waste of time for the person responding. You're asking for someone to spend a lot of time figuring out exactly what pitfalls would exist in order to port FS2 when you're completely unable to be able to do anything with the answer.

The fact that this question has been asked and answered repeatedly is what is beginning to fray people's nerves. Go actually do some programming on a mobile platform. Then do some coding for FSO and get to understand how the engine works. Once you're in a position where people can see that you actually have a clue about what you're attempting to talk about, you might find them more amenable. But right now, you're just asking pointless questions.

Re: Is there no possebilytie on phone fredding
Great. Can he code?

You seem to be under the mistaken impression that we're (well, I'm) blocking this out of spite or something. That is not the case. All I am trying to tell you is that, with the people working on FSO right now, we cannot do this. We know roughly what would need to happen, and we know roughly how long it would take, and how difficult it is. And all of that tells us that it would be a bad use of our time.

If you can find a dev who is able and willing to see this through, great. We'll welcome his or her contributions. But, and read this carefully, we will not drop everything and start working on it because a few people think it would be neat. That's not how this works.

Re: Is there no possebilytie on phone fredding
Nobody that I know of in the SCP currently has the required skillset to be able to port FSO over to any of the phone OS's, so even if you are willing to pay for our time, we don't currently have anybody in the team that can actually do this.

No, I do not want it.
My limited knowledge of programming will not do it.
I do not have time for it.
I was just "shocked" anyone ever proposed it.
Yes wouter, stop it.

FRED can't even be ported to Mac or Linux. Hell, FRED can't even be compiled by most Windows users.

In general it's best to remember that English may not be someone's first language and that as long as we understand what someone means, we don't have a problem with that.
