hi guys.

well, of _course_ he's got a Real Life, he's not going to dote on his mum every minute of every day, he's still a student, the government people would get on him if he didn't turn up at school. And if he's going to school he might as well help out as a prefect.

As for the rest, I could _make_ him check his email. He'd love the cards. What if you guys stagger the cards, to, say, i dunno, a set number every week so that he can save them somewhere and not get his email locked?
That's, of course, if he listens to me and actually checks the thing.

He's got his hands on a digital camera recently, by the way. Armed with that, he's been taking photos of anything that will stay still long enough. And quite a few things that don't, too. He's dangerous, I say. Some of them are quite funny. People at our school get up to the weirdest things.
$quot;Let your light shine before men...$quot;
Matthew 5:16

When I graduate, I'm going to be a doctor, and people are going to come to me looking for treatment and prescription drugs, and I'm going to give it to them. Is anyone scared yet?

Good to hear from you ;) I think we should rename you the relay station since we always hear about Steak from you these days... heh, and that's no bad thing! It's good to hear he's ok, lucky git him having a digital camera... what fun I could have with one of them!

I still think it might be better to have an archive made on either an HLP gallery or The Array for Setekhs cards, that way he could keep them whenever he liked and we wouldn't have to worry about repercussions on his mailbox system (they'd also be visible for everyone to see which would be nice - the more art the better ;)).

Setekh Last Seen: 5/30/02' 7:53am

I was looking around at Message Tracking, and some of Setekh's PM's said last online then. So remember the rumors of seeing him around for a few min a few months ago? He was viewing.

It was me who saw him online. :p

Then I posted about it to Setekh's "leaving" thread and the result was to get it locked. :D:p

Just add him to your HLP movie script: Steaky-wan Come-back-ee, returning from the Existance Beyond The Boards, and Our Only Hope™... :D

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

But the idea is good:)

i wasn't intending to send him each individual card, cause getting 40 emails a day would be annoying.

We could zip them up in Winzip and upload to somewhere on HLP (FTP)

or my idea... you could mail them to me or something... i could burn them on a CD, and we could send it to him

EDIT:  Guys, you don't need to know how to render to send him a card!  Just make the card (resolution unknown yet) with even just a note or something!  you can do it even in Microsoft Paint.  it's really easy!

Either we:

1)  Send to one person and then burn the CDs on a disk and send it to him via IceSpeed.

2)  Upload all the cards to a private FTP account where only he can view them (individually or in sequence)

3)  Upload all the cards to a public FTP account where anyone can view them (individually or in sequence)

I'm sure his mom is doing better, but he's still not back, and i'm s ur he's missing all of us.  So why don't we do this... it won't take long, and it will really make him feel better and 'raise his spirits' :)

So is this the go-ahead?  everyone want to go ahead with this?

If they do, then I'll open an account and everyone can email (or post) their 'cards' to me, and I'll put them together, name them correctly, and (depending on what method (see numbers 1-3 above) we choose) we can get them to him in some way!  It'll be easy and it'll really give him something to be happy about and to feel excited.  It won't take much of any of our time, and think of how it'll make him feel!

If we do, we can make a 600x400 pixels JPEG image.  Does that sound about good?  Depending on the quality, each one is 20-30 KB (i think) so 100 of them will only be 3 MB!!! :D

Before posting them... what does everyone think?  go ahead with it?

How about all the moderators in the forum?  Maeglamor?  Shrike?  Styxx?  How about you Thunder?  what do you all think?

nice to hear from you

I didn't intend to send each card individually.  not only would that take up a lot of his account space, but he'd be probable to miss some of them, and also it'd be better to zip them and archive them or something for future.

see the previous post from me

EDIT:

For more information, (please don't send cards YET) post here or send emails to:

I may buy one of these if it gets to the high street - don;t really trust my Switch or Visa cards justnow.

I think the cards thing is a good idea... not sure what the hell I'd put on one, though.

Some test i just carried out... All are the same picture, in different formats:

JPEG: 20.0 KB
GIF: 102.0 KB
JPEG MOV: 21.5 KB
GIF MOV: 93.7 KB
JPEG AVI (small): 139.0 KB
JPEG AVI (normal): 473.0 KB
GIF AVI (small): 137.0 KB
GIF AVI (normal): 473.0 KB
JPEG SWF: 20.1 KB
GIF SWF: 92.2 KB

Flash seems to compress pictures when exporting as SWF files, not as much with JPEGs (filesize actually increased by 10 bytes) but in GIFs it compressed almost 10 KB!  (9.8).

GIFs quality aren't as good as JPEGs, so if we do this, I recommend 600x400 pixel JPEGs...

Wow, this is such a fantastic and touching idea. Steak would love it. I think we should all email them to someone when we individually finish them (have a deadline,) make them into a slideshow, and upload it to HLP servers along with a ZIP that has all the cards in it. Thus he gets a nice slideshow with all the cards, and he can access them all individually.

Can't do renders? Take screenshots, or write a poem or something on a textured background. Make something in Paint, pick up some pics from the net, whatever.

I'm assuming this is only open to those forumites who actually knew Setekh? Just wondering if all the newbies were going to write stuff too.

i agree 100% with you darkage.  This should be only for people who know Setekh.

I mean, there's no way we can TELL people that they don't know him, but we can at least say that's it's only for people that know him.  I'm sure no one (not even a stupid newbie) would pretend to know Setekh, and if they did, Setekh would know they're a newbie pretending to know him, and that would be uber-pointless.

So GalacticEmperor, you think everyone should email the cards to someone (me) and then that someone (me again, or someone else) can put them all together and archive/arrange them?  That's what i thought too.  Also, you don't have to be able to render, you don't even have to decorate your 'card' if you don't want to, if you want to just write something on it, then that's cool, and he'll appreciate it just the same!

If we upload them on the HLP servers as a ZIP, then he won't be able to access them individually, he'll have to download the entire ZIP file, and THEN open them individually.  Only other alternative is to either not upload them at all, or just upload them as plain JPEGs, not zipped in any way.

You see, their (HLP)'s server, 3D action planet, i don't know what they're running, probably Apache, but they've disabled a viewer to view the ocntents of a folder (probably for security reasons... what i mean, is some places, you can go to http://www.whatever.com/pictures/ and they have a directory listing of the pictures)... HLP's server doesn't allow that, so i'll upload it to my server:  we've allowed that, and it'll be a much faster download speed (although our connection is nothing compared to Gamespy, 3DAP, etc.  we have hardly anyone using it, so therefore it's most times faster)

I mean, don't worry about that, we'll find a way... i'm just waiting for authorization from Thunder, Shrike, Maeglamor, and/or Styxx or any other admin.  I don't really have to ask permission i guess, but they've known Setekh (particulary Thunder) more than any of us here probably (most of us anyway) and they're admins, so they tell us what to do if it's a community effort, as in this one.

Admins?  Want to go ahead with this?

I was actually thinking of doing this, but I thought it still might be a spot for the community that people don't want to be reminded of. So, I went a different route, and decided not to risk upsetting anyone.

I agree what ya Stealth.

We can ofcourse zip all the cards and mail Setekh the link.
And then het IceSpeed to get Setekh download the files.

But there are many otherway's.

And whit out the people that don;t know setekh you also can avoid that people wil say the wrong things etc and cut back on pointless spam.

what i thought of doing is (if possible) everyone make an 800x600 or 1024x768 card (full screen!!!) and i could make a full-screen slide-show... and i could burn that slide show and all individual pictures on a disk, mail it to icespeed, and she could give it to Setekh... you know?

or we could just give him the link :)  i'm sure he'd look at it... he wouldn't need people to tell him to or make him, i don't think ;)

still awaiting admin's approval :D
