Don't you agree that the forums are beginning to dry up unfortunately? I sit waiting for responses to my topics and various others and I'd be lucky to see one reply per forum every hour or two. Compare this with SWG's forums: 10 replies to the one topic in 5 minutes. But I suppose they're all just Star Wars fans mainly anyway... I'm going nowhere with this reply. Just ignore me.

diversification. people worry more about their own forums/topics, so they spend more time hanging around them, so they spend less time hanging around other people's forums/topics.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Though I've only been here a relatively short time, compared to the First Ones, I don't think that I've seen the forum die down in that time. The community is small compared to a couple of other places I inhabit, however this is when I can pull out the cliche "size doesn't matter". It's rather uncommon for me to come across threads that don't have any replies (in the non-hosted forums at least) - if you stick around you will get a response. In other forums with more traffic and users, there remain plenty of unanswered questions and unchallenged comments. And most of the time, I'd rather receive one or two responses in this forum, than a dozen in another, because the quality of posts here is quite high in my experience. Even the nonsence replies are of good quality.

Of course, as a community moves on, the First Ones will begin to move away, called onto other things. While it's not always a joyous occasion, it does happen. However it doesn't mean that they're dying or dead. New people comtinue to find out about the game, play it, enjoy it, wish to discuss it, find HLP, and become part of a happy community. To use another cliche, the forums are what you make of it. I for one don't plan on leaving, although I don't actually contribute to any projects (though I wouldn't object if there's a niche I can fit into somewhere), which I think was the focus of the original question being asked - I've forgotten after only 5min.... looks like time's up.... have to stop writing before this turns into an aimless ramble....

I must disagree with Pegasus V's gloomy view, or at least put myself forward as a contradiction of it.  I am 23, and joined the FS community last year.  I'll be starting my graduate studies this September, but have no intention of dropping out of the community.

Moreover, the number of members here on HLP is growing, and many are active.  If some of the admins have happened to retire around the same time, that is no reason to think the community is in trouble.  Do not let your vision be clouded: two raindrops don't make a monsoon.

Let me tell you guys´one thing about why community members drop out. My guess is that some us get involved in to mutch projects. That itslef takes up most of our time. And then there is the real life. Those who get involved in big projects get soon tired of it and drop out.

I have been around the FS community since fs2 has been released. And thats a long time. And like thunder siad i'll be damnd if leave this community now.

To me HLP's fate is now in the hands of Digital Anvil, Microsoft(gasp!) and Freelancer. Hell, the whole space-sim genre is riding on it.

I will of course be here to the very end even if I am the last one around. I have been with this community too long to abandon it now. ;) I do not have any doubts about the survival of HLP; it is Freespace that I am more worried about. It will probably live out this year, but I am not so sure about the next.

Now our only hope is for interplay to release it's rights for FS and for volition (or us) to be able to buy them...

But meanwhile I'm sure this community will live on.... there are plenty of younger members anyway... (and some older people, like, past college)
Science alone of all the subjects contains within itself the lesson of the danger of belief in the infallibility of the greatest teachers in the preceding generation . . .Learn from science that you must doubt the experts. As a matter of fact, I can also define science another way: Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts. - Richard Feynman
