Mods can apparently get away with using licenced music too.

That might be true for UK and the US but not universally.
"When you work with water, you have to know and respect it. When you labour to subdue it, you have to understand that one day it may rise up and turn all your labours into nothing. For what is water, which seeks to make all things level, which has no taste or colour of its own, but a liquid form of Nothing?" - Graham Swift, Waterland

"As you sought to steal a kingdom for yourself, so must you do again, a thousand times over. For a theft, a true theft, must be practiced to be earned." - The terms of Nyrissa's curse, Pathfinder: Kingmaker

Mods are non-commercial products. Because of this they can get away with things that a commercial release could not. Specifically, it appears mods can circumvent copyright laws, as the amount of copyright infringement that modders get away with is simply shocking.

This sentence is wrong.

Mods can not circumvent copyright law, it still applies to modders completely, and it has been applied several times over the years. The only thing a mod using copyrighted assets can hope for is for them to fly under the radar; as soon as the IP holders (or rather, their lawyers) wake up and bother to file a DMCA notice (or whatever your local equivalent is), that mod is gone.

Speaking of Aliens, mods can seemingly get away with using entire licenced IPs (Intellectual Properties), such as the Aliens mod for DooM.

Again, wrong. If an IP holder decides not to enforce their copyright or their trademarks, that's their decision; but the threat of enforcement will always exist (See: The Stage 9 thing, or literally any Star Wars thing).

You're making a general mistake in the article in claiming that "non-commercial" means or carries with it "non-infringing". That's very, very wrong; "But we didn't make any money off it" is not a legally valid defence against "you violated our copyright".

I get the intention of the article. Making games your own by modding them is awesome. But saying "....and you can totally get away with copyright infringement!" is just not true.

Let there be monsters and let there be pain

Re: Moar articles with Coin-Drop :-)
Hi again peeps.

Thank you for the heads up. You guys are the fist to point this out, despite the article being up for about a week. I have made the necessary corrections. Please take a look and let me know if it is now accurate.

It looks like I will soon be writing for (and getting paid by) a larger publication  - Exclusively Games  :) . I believe they have a proper editorial team, which hopefully means errors such as these should not slip through the editorial net. The downside of course is that I will no longer have free-rein to write about whatever I want, so probably no more stealth-promotion-via-articles from now on.

Re: Moar articles with Coin-Drop :-)
As for Blue Planet and its writing, I'd not only mention of ship descriptions, but also weapon descriptions, intelligence data and of course GRANITE HUNTER files. I'd also say that inserting a spoiler warning should be in place.

As for other modding communities, I can't just not mention what people did to the old-school Gothic 1 and 2 games. The modding community around these is also massive, and the gains in terms of graphics are also astounding. Grab a comparison. Not to mention that people also patched up massive amounts of bugs, issues and boredom in the third part of the game.

By the way, not only I am (actually, I was) a frequent player of Misery, I've also been aiding with Polish translation of Misery 2.2 and I was a major contributor for The Armed Zone addon translation to Polish. So let me say, I share your sentiment to the mod :P.

Hi there, thanks for the feedback.

RE BP - I already shilled that pretty hard with my three-parter a few months back ;-)

Re Gothic 1 & 2 - I haven't any experience with these but the video link looks great. It is amazing what modders can do to polish up old gems :-)

RE MISERY - glad to see we we have another masochist on here  If you liked that you will probably like the book I wrote, which was heavily inspired by it - check out it's web page and click on the front cover to download it for free: https://www.nomadsreviews.co.uk/trlzsg

You may also like the FIVE-parter I did about MISERY a few weeks back:
