Only private schools back where I grew up had uniforms.
Mostly just the catholic schools and stuff like that.
However due to kids own stupidity clothing restrictions became enforced.
"Starter" jackets were all the rage. Expensive sports jackets with your favorite teams on them. Guys would wear them to school, put the (heavy) things in their lockers.
Locker gets busted into by someone else who wants the jacket.
Parents come in demanding the school replace the jacket.
Well guess what, no more starter jackets allowed in school or on the grounds period. Solve that issue.
Then guys started bringing guns to school (at the much larger and ****ed up high school across town that served most of the military kids) And after a bout of that, no backpacks that weren't completely see-through weren't allowed and neither was a jacket that had a liner or inside pockets. They could be brought in, but must be put in your locker. The other high school kept getting worse and worse with gang-related stuff untill finally they had cops there every day at all the exits/entrances and a metal detector at the front door. The ENTIRE student body had to go through that door every morning, however after school they could leave from anywhere. Drug dogs were always on the scene (and they found stuff every week too).
I don't think uniforms would have helped in all those instances, but damn things go downhill quick when kids **** around.
Well, I know about the columbine look.
I was in the navy and when I got out I still had my issued trenchcoat.
Then the columbine shooting happened.
I like to walk around town. Go to the store, alright, why drive, it's a couple blocks, why kill the battery by making it try to start the car twice in the dead of winter when you'll drive for like, 5 minutes? I pull on my sweatshirt and my trench and start walking, rain snow sleet... It's why I kept the thing.
Then I had people trying to jump curbs with their cars, been spit on (and broke my hand going through the guys driver side window after him. What broke the window was pulling him out of it so I could hit him with the other one.) And get harassed by the cops way too many times because 'someone fit my description'

Me, talking to a police officer who pulled me over (walking!) for a "roadside interview" while going to get a hotdog and a refill of my 64oz drink for 50 cents from a Circle-K two blocks from my house (why pay more if I don't have to?)
"You mean someone wearing a trenchcoat, carrying an empty circle-k mug and wearing an "I hate barney" shirt was seen two miles away (not even on the road I was on) in an alley jumping through someone's back yard?"
"Yes sir it was."
Then asked me where I lived, where I was going (duh!) asked to see my id...
After making me wait out in a steadily increasing rain for 15 minutes so he can check for warrants or stuff he finally pops out of his car and gives me my stuff back. "Okay sir, you're clear."
"You know officer, this is the fifth time this month I've been given one of these. And before that it was about 2 or three times a month since that damn school shooting. You guys keep bothering me and I'm going to get a lawyer and file charges for harassment."
"Well sir that's up to you. I'm just doing my job."

But if someone did call that in and I fit the bill, why the hell didn't he take me in for questioning or some ****?
What's really bad is that I still got bugged, though nowhere near as much, and on several occasions I was followed for a mile or so (on my bike).
