Hello people, I'm an old timer, I made ships back in my days (the ezechiel etc). I wanted to give that old bird another go, but I find it hard to remap all those keys, most won't even be accepted by my controller. I've looked at the mods in that new-fangled Knossos thing, but I've seen nothing, so here I am asking, did anybody ever give those control a go-over, with a better mapping interface, better mouse control or whatnot?

The closest thing I remember to improving the controls is this script that allows you to use your mouse as joystick: https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=97931.0

Besides that, FSO has as many controls as it always had. Some mods/Total conversions may have even more as the game added a lot of features over the years (but that depends heavily on what you're going to play as some may be further off scope from classic FS) so you'll most likely rely a lot on the keyboard anyway.

Hello, welcome back.

One of the features that may be new to you is the addition of controls presets.  These were made during the controls code overhaul project as a way to preserve controls bindings between pilot selections and also a handy way to share presets among others.

There may be a preset floating around that has a sensible binding scheme for gamepads.

I used to use a somewhat straightforward preset, which I don't currently have easy access to due to working so much these days.. but that's another story.  Anyway, the scheme is so:

D-pad is for energy management, left, up, and right are for weapons, shields, engines, and down is equalize.

ABXY buttons (or equivalent playstation geometry) are targeting.  I don't quite remember which one was which, but it was something to the effect of nearest hostile, boresight, targets target, and maybe nearest bomb.

Shoulder buttons were cycling weapon modes, the trigger or second shoulder buttons are for firing said weapon.

Then finally secondary fire rates were bound to the "start" or "select" buttons,  afterburner was a joystick button press, left stick was pitch and bank, right stick was throttle and roll.

...if I can find ample time and (remember) I'll toss a preset file your way.

  Oh, if the F1 help overlay wasn't helpful enough, there may be a FAQ on the freespace wiki that goes over everything in detail (just put FAQ in the search bar)

Hey there, thanks for the answers, I'll check the script and I'll look into those presets :)
After all these years I had hoped someone would have made some kind of mouse-look ala freelancer/chorus and support for more buttons etc haha.

The vampire? I didn't even remember I had released that one haha.
Oh and I just want to play the FS port and FS2 for now. I miss the good old space sims, now it's all trendy open world and rogue-like nonsense. I'm an old man, give me my linear, mission-after-mission plot-driven campaign darn it.

oooh, well, the mouse control is in FSO, I just didn't notice, and it does exactly what I wanted, awesome, cheers :)

How come nobody ever made a widescreen HD version of the FS1 main menu? Guys I leave for 20 years and it's not done that's disapointing! (kidding, you've all done a great job)

The mainhall? I did. Or if you mean the actual menus themselves? I created a whole system to do exactly that and it's done and working for FS2. Looks like FSPort hasn't taken the time to integrate it, though. I'm not part of the FSPort team and have no plans to create it myself, so you'll have to bug Goober directly for it, I suppose.

Actually I had it installed, why isn't it used when I launch FSport from knossos :/ Bah I'll figure it out
edit: figured it out, I gotta launch the mediavp pack, not the port itself.

You'd be surprised how many mods ended up using Ezechiel and Vampire. Pretty sure that both are among the top 5 most popular fighters ever made. :cool:

They were top-quality when they were made and both received new maps over the years (the Ezechiel got 10 different ones from 3 or 4 different people), the models underneath are good enough to still look decent today IMHO.

Old pipeline still works I say. Galemp continues to do 3D stuff mostly the same way he was a decade ago, but lots of new things are available.

I don't know how I feel about re-learning all that just for one ship haha. If I were to dip my toes in there again, I might end up wanting to resurect OTT (albeit with changes), and considering how it went last time, it's most likely not a good idea.

Also I'm just a normal guy, I think I make good designs, but models-wise, I've seen stuff here way better than I used to do, so stop treating me like some kind of legend  :lol:

Now to make myself a modded reticle because it's too darn smol for mine old eyes, I keep aiming with the mouse instead of it.

edit 3: ok it convers to ani, but how do I convert FROM ani to get the palette =_= Also I suspect since I'm using knossos, fsport etc I can't just drop an ani in the mymod folder and hope for it to work :doubt:

There's something called EFFs now, which are text files so you can bind in PNGs or DDS so no more quality loss (also works for HUD effects)

If you've got any questions just go ahead! The game has changed a lot over since you were around the last time, but then some stuff remained the same, so I (and the other people around here) just try to help the best they can :)

The thing is, I don't remember anything at all xD And the fact it's all run through Knossos now means nothing works the same at all anymore I guess. I can't even seem to have two mods ( (cockpit mod and MjnMixael's mainhalls on FSport) run at the same time for exemple, I just don't get how it works. Dunno why it's not just "launch FSO" with a list of checked mods, like everywhere else  :doubt:
