Ok, I'm looking to buy a new graphics card to upgrade my GeForce 2 which is getting a bit outdated now. I'm looking for a GeForce 4, either a Ti4400 or a 4600 at the 128mb (64 if all else fails) range.

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=32570

That's what I've got in mind, my only concern being the lack of picture. I'm worried that the fan and heatsink might not be good enough.

I think that's the same card, correct me if I'm wrong. So basically, I'm asking for advice.

Oh, and I don't mind spending about £200.

Riva TNT 2 - totally rocks!

Oh, wait - wrong year. Darn this infernal Time Machine™ - these instructions look like they were written by a 4-year old!

Hmmmm, on second thought, he probably is 4 years old now. Silly me. :p

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Get the best you can for the money, whilst the Ti 4200 can run at 4600 speeds the 4600 is far more stable for obvious reasons, go figure.

On the other hand it might not be much time before the next release of graphics cards...

In the meantime the Ti 4600 gets my vote, it's steady as a rock and fast as well.

I'm not upgrading my graphics cards until Nvidia kicks out NV30. Then we'll see which is the better investment.

What's that?

Basically I'm looking to buy the best I can afford so that it'll last me a long time and not be out of date too quickly.

Anyone who buys an NV30 in the first 6-8 months of it's release is a moron.

edit: The NV30 is nVidias successor to the GF4 and competitor to the Radeon 9700 (which is already kicking the crap out of GF4s I believe). It's going to be ridiculously overpriced and have no support for a year or so after its release so there really is no point in buying one. The only real advantage it offers is that, when its released, nVidia will cut the price of the Ti4600's.

Go figure. :p Or directly the benchmarks. :)

But how can you say that anyone who's buying NV30 in the first 6-8 months of it's release is a moron? I doubt it'll take THAT long to make good drivers, as nVidia is pretty good with drivers. Even Radeon 9700 drivers are working pretty good already, and it's totally new.

Drivers have nothing to do with it. Its the fact that it will have a release price tag approaching USD$500 and will have very little to show for it for about a year after it's release. Anyone who buys one in that time is just throwing money away.

the new trident card looks quite good for the price.

maybe the Creative P10 based cards or the new radeon 9xxx boards.

The new ones are a good deal more "future-proof" due to their increased flexibility and programmability...of course future proof is an overused word, specially when two companies who push out crap regularly (nvidia and microsoft) band together and screw everyone else over with their lasts-5-minutes half-baked solutions to gamers problems instead of addressing the research as a whole.

So the NV30 or its sucessor would maybe be a future investment. I did see the Radeon 9700 but it was rather pricey.

*shouts into megaphone*

NVIDIOT ALERT

The NV30 isnt even taped out yet, mainly because Nvidia thought they had the professional guys owned with directX/microsoft and then 3Dlabs gives them a sucker punch with openGL 2.0, which is a vastly superior API if you ask me.

You can buy DX9 compliant cards now at around the $600 mark, expect them to half in price once they bring out "Low end" variants.

I'm probably picking up a Radeon 9000 soon. Pricewatch is 1337.

I decided to bypass the GF4/R8500 generation, so I will be doing the same.

The same could be said about the R9700, which is a DX9 part, as well.

Hopefully that means that R9700 has dropped in price by the time it comes out. Hopefully this will lower the price of the NV30 somewhat. We'll see in the coming months :)

I'm not going to read the whole thread so maybe this was said before....

I think you should get a GF3 (a cheap one) right now and maybe upgrade when the NV35 (GF5) comes out, since I've heard it's actually going to have new features unlike the GF4...
