Anyone here attend LAN Parties?
Hey all - a curiousity/info seeking mission from me... who here attends or organises LAN parties? (if anyone). My friends and I want to start small with some local ones and maybe work our way up to some 20 person LANs in the future. But we don't really know our way around what might have to be done to sort it out. Any thoughts?

I've been invited two or three times by friends, they booked a hall at a local recreation center and basically asked that anyone who came along payed a £3 cost to cover the price of the hall. Those things have a habit of turning into warez-fests though and I neither had the HDD space to play any of the games they intended to play, or space for the software that they were 'distributing'.

Sounds like fun on the whole though.

I find no need playing a computer game 24 hours straight, then sleeping for six hours, and playing another 24 hours. I'll rather do something constructive. like read a good book. or go out to a classical concert. or all of the above, only with chicks.

Trouble with LAN parties - no chicks.

what kind of LAN parties do they have in Estonia dude?
Over here, when we have LANs, male and females are invited ;)

and we don't play 24 hours straight... usually it's start at about 4:00, go to a movie at 8:30, resume playing when we get back, at about 11:00, stop playing at 2:00, have a snack, go to bed, wake up at 10:00, start playing, continue playing till about 3:00

:D

Sure,  mostly everyone is invited, but the number of males who play games exceed the number of females who play games about times 10. too much.

Were these overnight jobs? My main concern here being we'd like to do it over the course of a weekend and obviously you may need certain... permits to do this in public halls and so on (insurance and such.. not sure). Is that right?

I think it's dependant on the nature of the place, sports halls would obviously be covered for sports related injuries and that's where they hosted a LAN once. I think the second time I was invited it was to a comunity hall type building, my friend didn't say anything about cover but that doesn't necessarily mean that insurance was not an issue.

Sorry I can't be more help than that, I haven't spoken to the guy in ages and he moved to uni a few months ago so I can't get a hold of him to ask him.

My little bro and I are networked together at home, so we have a permanent LAN set up here. It's quite beneficial when going teamed up in Renegade - communication is everything. :)

For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. The biggest problem with these things (or at least if you don't have multi-millionaire friends...) is that not everybody can bring a 'puter... if you're inviting peeps who can't bring a comp then make sure you have alternatives (consoles and TVs and the like)...

Though then it's more of a Bring-Anything-Electronic-And-Get-Fattened-By-Pizza Party ;)
