As some of you know, i run a computer with 6Gb of space, and 56 Mb RAM. I can get it upgraded to a 80Gb HD and 256 RAM pretty cheaply through Gateway. I have some options from 80-500 Gig HardDrives... Im just unsure what to get... I know that most standard computers now have 40Gigs, but i wan't more. I just wan't feedback from people here.

Judging by your current specs I'd guess that you have a fairly slow CPU and Video Card too?
if thats the case its probably just cheaper and easier to get a whole new computer... DDR ram is cheap, so are P4s
my MSI P4 mobo cost 75 canadian... CPU was around 100.. cant remember how much the ram was... GeForce 3s and Radeon 7xxx and 8xxx are reasonably cheap too...

It actualy runs games quickly, just loads slowly... But i can get all this for less than $200 Americian($300 for a 500gig HD)... Its easier to do this then get a new system, and the video is working fine, so im just gonna upgrade.

I don't reckon most people will need more than 120GB for the time being, unless you collect lots of music, pictures, movies or other media on your computer or play a hell of a lot of games! However 120 is large enough to allow for pretty much anything you need for the immediate future (next few years). Save the rest of your money for anything else you may need.

I have 2 drives..
a 30 gig quantum.. slow as hell... use it for MP3s and Lightwave stuff... programs too..
and a 12 gig 7200.... use it for all my games... its more than enough..
usually have 15 free on the 30 and 3 or 4 on the 12...

Believe me, I just finished disecting my old P3 computer, looking for parts. Custom built is the way to go (just make sure you plug in the floppy cable right, otherwise you'll get strange results)

6GB, ack that would be pretty painful to live with.. good thing you're updgrading. That's like what? The OS + 4ish games?

Anyway, I'm sure even 80'll be enough.. we have a video composition comp in the house with an 80 gig and it's nowhere near have full. (though the comp isn't used much...)

Actually I'm well off with the 29 gig and 10 gig on this comp... I just have to occasionally clean things out and burn to CD.

The solitary 9 gig on the laptop's kinda nasty though... I wanted to put 4 or 5 operating systems on it but I don't want to cram filesystems into really small partitions in case I want to install some extra big stuff.

I just got a 256MB stick of PC133 SDRAM, got another in the board originally (mobo seems to have a problem with the DDR RAM slots, unfortunately - I've only discovered this after the warrenty expired).

I'd honestly say to get the smallest hard drive (and hence cheapest), because I store lots of big bitmaps and suchlike for mods, have quite a few mp3s and a load of games, but have never exceeded about 15GB on my HD.

In fact, if you want to spend a bit extra, you could just try and get a 40GB HD, but the fastest one available.  I think, compared to a slower,larger one at the same price it'd be better for ya

and from now on, I'm going to build all my PCs myself.  Had enough problems dissecting this one to put me off shop-made PCs for life......

Asus A7N8X (with the onboard 6.1 channel audio, Ethernet, Firewire, USB2.0, 5 PCI slots, and has 8x AGP (AGP 3.0)) for $113 * (note: AGP 3.0 is compatable with 2.0 cards (2x/4x) since it still uses 1.5V) ($117 from newegg)
512MB PC2700 for $64 * ($68 at newegg)
AMD XP 1800+ (1.53GHz) for $66 (Retail, from newegg.  OEM is only $3 cheaper, so you might as well go retail and get the heatsink and an extra 3 years of warranty.)
Then you have $47 for the case (CHIEFTEC Chasis (Mini-Mid Tower) BLACK Model DH-01B 450W) from newegg.  (see it)

Total: $290 (w/o shipping)

That is CHEAP for a pretty much brand new system.  You can use your existing drives in this system with no trouble at all.  All the prices, unless specified are from newegg.com

The Foxconn PC115 case is nice too. I have one sitting next to me right now, and that's around 30 from Newegg.

EDIT: Also, a slightly cheaper but still good is the MSI KT3 Ultra2, which has just about everything that one has except for the AGP 8x, the firewire, the DDR400 support, and the ethernet.

Unless you really need SATA and can live with only two IDE ports and a single LAN port then you can do a lot better than the A7N8X. Boards like the EPoX 8RDA+ and its sister board, the FIC AU11, are cheaper and still implement the onboard Firewire, USB 2.0, SoundStorm 5.1 audio, AGP8X and dual channel DDR. As mentioned earlier you only get a single pair of ATA133 ports (and an extra PCI slot) and only a single onboard LAN PHY but depending on your needs that may or may not be a problem.

seriously? huh I jsut got the exact same one yesterday... Maxtor 80 G 7200 rpm i was sick of my measly 20 G... filled up to quickly cause all i do is gmaing pictures mp3's and movies
