It's the Tromp and AFAIK it's quite recent!

Yeah, the Tromp is her real name

HMNLS TROMP (F 801) is one of two TROMP class AAW frigates serving the Dutch Navy. TROMP was at HMC Dockyard in Halifax, NS, on March 27, 1997.

a, i think your correct, and "De Ruyter" was a famous admiral IIRC, but my history there is a bit foggy.

Whats the general amrmament for a light cruiser? The Tromp has this:

4 75mm guns
4 40mm Bofors
4 depth charge throwers
6 21" torpedo tubes (12 torp)

Seems a wee bit low....

According to that book of mine (Janes) the Tromp is a frigate, but even so, that is a bit puny. You'd expect some SAMs or SSMs at least. It must be quite old then, if it has depth charges.

The plot thickens. The book says that it DOES have missiles. Lots of 'em Very odd. Perhaps that pic of yours, Miss T, was taken before the dome was fitted.

The AEGIS Arleigh Burk (sp?) class cruisers dont have any heavy armement in the way old fasioned cruisers did, its not just a term given to ship which are above a certain tonnage and length.... but arnt aircraft carriers.

The Ruskies had (have a few left) the only ships even approaching old fasioned heavy cruiser size.

Most ships have depth charges which are helicopter dropped, or the capacity to lay them via torpedo or standard launcher.

Actually the Burkes do have quite heavy armament, but it's not that visible. They might not have many guns and what have you, but they have the Vertical Launch Missile system, with 96 tubes in total.
Unlike most Russian ships, though, as they tend to bristle with guns of all kinds.

Well that'll be an old photo, perhaps when she was first launched. And by the looks of that, she was launched in the 1930s! The dome would have been added during the 60s I suppose, and the missiles at the same time. She would have refits every 10 years or so, like most ships.

By heavy armement i meant things like 16 inch guns

You need a cetain tonnage before you can mount heavy guns to stop your ship breaking up or capsizing, any small firgate can mount and fire most missiles.

My point was they are heavy enough to be classified as cruisers.

But they're not classed as Cruisers, though.  They're destroyers, or at least they were when I last checked.

Are you thinking about the Ticonderoga AEGIS cruisers?

Ah yes, the Tromp has missiles. Its a Anti-Air defense frigate A AA Frigate without AA weaponry would be a wee bit odd
