Wow, I just found this thread.  I used to come into the Art thread a lot before but stopped for a while.  Was only going into the SCP thread til I got slow at work and can actually look around here.  That's why I never noticed the sticky

There's probably gliders everywhere actually, that's most likely the most available flying thing you can get. Seeing vertical winds are quite violent on Oleon, it must be quite easy to reach a nearby island with one of those. Think of gliders as Oleon bicycles

Anyway, I'm glad you like, comments like this makes me want to take my graphic tablet and start drawing ( and actually, as I have some free time today, that's what I'll do right away ).

and if you could manage to lure Steak in that thread, that'd be nice, btw

im still curious about this world. how strong do the winds get?
oh yeah, and is it a coincidence that the (greek? roman? i get confused) god of winds is 'aeolus', which looks a lot like 'eol'?

well, for the winds, check the SD panel explaining the flying islands. All that creates large air mass motions, so, well, there's often winds, everywhere, and often, quite strong.
and no, that's not a coincidence, eol ( or eole, don't remember ) is the french for aeolus

i did see the explanations. but wouldn't strong winds mean that hanggliders get ripped up? oh hey, what level of technology exactly are these people at? i know you said they find stuff that's waaaay advanced beyond them, but obviously they're at least advanced enough to make all these weird as crafts. so do they have rockets? and hey, what about gene modifications to the people?

the strongest winds are located under the islands. If he knows well enough gliding navigation, a traveller shouldn't have any problem crossing small distances.
Tech level of the humans is... hard to define. I think saying early to mid 20th century tech would fit, but  with a different evolution.
There is an handful of jets, but there's no rockets ( they can't go in space ), but they know it's possible ( they just didn't try, I suppose ).
There's nothing like gene science, no genetically engineered super soldier or anything. But mutations on Oleon exist because of the genesis pits.

i wasn't thinking of supersoldiers, actually, more along the lines of wings and stuff for general survival.

Nah, there's nothing like self grown wings or stuff like that. And even if that were existing, I doubt most people could afford that.
Ok I'll throw in random infos:
Keep in mind most countries of Oleon use a feudal system, and most commoners are poor. Most people are farmer or manufactory workers, planes are common in Oleon, but NOT for commoners, who often spend most of their lives on the same island.
Most people use transport blimps when they have to go "abroad".
Electricity exists, but is hard to produce in large quantities ( but many people have very small generators, working with differents gaz or oil ).

how big are the islands?

what about caves in the islands? from your pics they looked like inverted pyramids... can you have catacombs and, well, even natural wind erosion would produce caves, wouldn't it? and you know how caves can be formed by percolating rain (that's the technical term, i think- we learnt it in school), well, would the same idea work with evaporation from the oceans beneath?

islands can be small or very large, it depends.
As for the rest you think too much
 I doubt evaporation produces erosion. Rain does coz it gathers on the ground then flows along the rock, creating all the holes and rifts, etc. evaporation won't do that.
As for the winds, they would tend to make parts of the islands crumble rather than creating caves, but there's probably a few caves here and there, mostly coz they were there already before, I suppose, and resisted to the propagation of, her, nevermind
But there shouldn't be much worry of all the islands disapearing after a dozen millenium, they're quite tough, and, even if a big part of an island breaks apart, well, it'll just float next to it and won't make much difference, I suppose.
