Any Mac users around here? The G5
[q]From Apple's Powermac site

When compared head-to-head against the same PCs, in a large series of Photoshop tests the dual 2GHz Power Mac G5 is 2.2 times faster than the 3GHz Pentium 4-based system and almost twice as fast as the dual 3.06GHz Xeon-based system.[/q]

Pretty powerful stuff, apparently. Anyone here a Mac user?

There's one thing, and one thing only that's preventing a Mac from sitting on my desk right now: The fact that they're still too damn expensive.

well yeah, it better be twice as powerful, since it's 4 times more expensive
Cray should sell their computers the same way :doubt:
"our octoprocessors are 12 times faster than any of the personal computer available today".
How plain is that?

[color=66ff00]Surely since OSX is based on UNIX you have a good chance of porting freespace linux to it? Or have i got my OS'es mixed up?

:blah: Its a Mac. I'd rather get a 2.5ghz for £500 quid, for a multitude of obvious reasons. One being Macs suck.
Got Ether?

Hell, P4s don't allow multiple CPUs. ANY alternative to not being able to upgrade some ****box comp in two years when you need that much processor to play ****in' Minesweeper is starting to sound good. AND everything ships with XP nowadays, which is basically Mac OS X with a vendetta against your memory chip and enough bugs to simulate a termite infestation on your hard disk.

And that's saying something, because I always have and still do consider buying a Mac, or in particular anything with Mac OS, tantamount to putting on stilletto heels, leather straps, and a feather boa and strutting around lisping about how you need a screensaver or your monitor will explode. They're the ****in' wood blocks of computers, and leapord-print ones at that. I prefer a chainsaw.

Well, duh. They always have, what's the shock that they've continued a time-honored tradition?

I've never seen an Apple that was faster than a decently-built PC. I've never seen one that was even pretty close- they've all been noticeably slower than their contemporaries on the PC market. Whatever the hell the draw to Macs is (simplicity and a marginally better OS than the latest equivalent of a Windows bukkake scene), speed is NOT it. And yet they're always "NINE TIMES FASTER!!1!!1!1"

Sure guys, buy a Mac, and enjoy playing Tetris 3.0 :D

I mean, seriously, the Macs are **** when it comes to games, both in frame rates, and selection. (Ooh-ah, Americas Army (which kicks major ass on the PC) and Unreal Tournament top the list, watch me wet my pants, screw Doom 3 on the PC!)

Well, depends what you're looking for, I guess. I've got this violent love/hate relationship with Escape Velocity ("It's so boring! It's so cool! Trading sucks! Pirating rules!"), so I'm not really the most objective person on the subject, but it seems a lot of Mac games are less glitzy but better designed. It's got that kinda small-community thing going on where users release all sorts of cool ****- which you really don't see with Windows software too much.

On benifit of buying a mac though is that if you buy a top of the range Mac now you'll still have a reasonably powerful computer in 2 years time.
There's less of that running to stay still **** with the mac.

If you buy any top-of-the-line machine you'll have a decent box in two years. Hell, right now I'm posting from a PC that is, last I checked, three years old. It can still run with the best of 'em, though the vid card's showing its age.
