had 98SE crash about 5 times a day :doubt:
Xp crashes about 3 times a week, I call that quite an achievement :p ( I run a lot of progs at the same time, and before uyou ask, I do that coz I have to, ok? )

XP is quite stable over here, switched to it after I had Windows 98SE do a near-complete crash (I could get into Windows using safe mode, but that was about it).

Only problems I have with XP are with some of my older parts not cooperating driver-wise.

Basically, does anyone else see my point about this possibly being an absolutely ingenious jab at Mac-bashing PCs? :D

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. You mean the whole thing of making fun of PC users who bash Macs all the while bashing Macs anyways :)

If thats what you mean, then I got that.  It was very funny.  Especially because I sell and use Macs at work.  The be all and the end all is that I have totally gotten out of my system any impression that the Mac system is any better than the PC system.  The supposed system stability, flawless design, and that sort of thing...meanwhile I find them more frusterating to use, there is no hide all windows and go to desktop function in OS 10.2 (I hear Panther will have it - horray, this should have been done earlier), and the kicker is that the things crash more often than all of my PC's running Win98 and WinXP.  Now I'm sure it broils down to the software you are running and how well its installed...but I certainly see nothing in any way superior to the PC platform and the fact that I get around better in a DOS/Windows environment means that I'm not going to switch any time soon.  Bring on a good Linux competitor and some serious game support...that'll get me away from MS :D

Is OSX really that unstable Icefire? I'd always assumed that it would be rock solid thanks to the BSD core.

You can install the latest codecs without actually installing WMP.

(well, I think you can anyway. if not... eh, just go ahead and install the latest WMP, but never use it)

It's interesting that diamondgeezer remains firmly convinced that I'm a troll, when the tragic truth is that I just have a nil tolerance for twits... such as him.

I would hope and assume that if all you are running is OSX native programs than it would be more stable than it is...as it stands, the sales system we use is still OS9.  And while it works...other OS9 programs will have trouble running at the same time.  Better yet...IE which is OS X native tends to hang or pause for several seconds consuming much more time browsing around than it does on my pc (where IE is so fast I barely even notice any pauses).

Maybe I've just had the worst case scenarios with Macs but every single one I have used so far I have not seen a marked improvement in stability.  As it stands, they are less stable than either of my Windows XP machines.  So I love being given the speech about the superiority of Macs (from customers that come in for instance) when I've found that they are just as flawed as the PC's that I prefer.

Its just odd...its just my observation...and my frusteration.  But at one time I did consider switching...OS X is a very nice looking operating system.  With no software loaded, it performs nicely...and several design considerations aside it does work very nicely.  But I've found the errors and discovere the grass not greener on the other side...
