Kyuss are at least five times the band Metallica could never be.

"Shoot Me Again" is a decent song... but that's all I've heard.

Anyone here a fan of Falconer?

yup, S&M. :p

True, very true.  St. Anger isn't the best Metallica, but its solid.  A friend of mine, who an amazing bass player, learned Frantic in under a week, and played it at our school amnesty coffe house.  That was a site to see.  Oh, his set list was For whom the bell tolls, Fight for your right to party, and Frantic.  Killer!  They kicked the crap out of the little punk wannabes who played later.  St. Anger, I think, won't be remebered as the greatest album Metallica ever did, that's still [argubaly] the black album, or whatever.  Its the songs that will be remembered.  Frantic, Sweet Amber, Some Kind of Monster.... Those are sweet songs, and will be that much sweeter live.  It was also an album that had to grow on some people, my drum teacher, for example, was unsure, but now can't get enough.  The one thing I've discovered is that musical taste is one of the most personal things ever, i'd say even more so than religion.  No two people like exactly the same bands, always.  Take my friend, the bass player.  He got me hooked on Rock, and I've gone from there.  He has made numerous sugestions in the record store that I have found to be accurate.  But, everynow and then, our tastes diverge.  He listens to some stuff I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole, while he dislike some of my stuff with a passion.  So I'll try not to take all the Metallica bashing personally, but The hour drive, half hour subway ride, long line, putting up with the trash that is Limp Bizkit, to go see Metallica is so worth it to me.

Now what are these two other bands that yoou've mentioned?
I'm intrigued.

Falconer: I think I've heard the name
Kyuss: Not a clue

What should I check out from them.  I'm always willing to give new music a go.

if i knew how to play guitar i would have kicked the crap out of the bands at school if i played those too, i would have added Orion, One, or Seek and Destroy though.  possibly with the exception of one of my friend's bands who did rather well in a competition a few months ago, but they are a hard rock/goth type band like korn

Queensryche haven't done anything remotely decent since Operation:Mindcrime. Even that wasn't too great.

Kyuss, for whomever was asking, were the band that pretty much spawned the whole of the stoner rock movement, also a great place to hear what a certain Mr Joshua Homme is capable of on guitar.

Listen to the following songs by them:

Tangy Zizzle
Phototropic
Space Cadet
Demon Cleaner
50 Million Year Trip (Downside Up)
Green Machine

That should give you a feel for the band.

matter of taste. To me Operation Mindcrime was brilliant, Empire a wonder, and "take another title" was "put another stupid superlative here".

Here goes:
St Anger: Only heard the first two songs properly. Frantic was OK, but it needed a solo or a turnaround section half-way through to break it up a bit. The title track could, and should have been a hell of a lot better than it is. It sounds (in the words of Kerrang! magazine) like it was recorded at the bottom of a wheelie bin. The production is bloody awful. There's no clarity in the sound at all - the guitars are so distorted that the sound actually breaks up at some points, and the drums are horribly overblown. As for the bass, they might as well have not bothered replacing Jason at all - you can't hear it.

I think Metallica have cocked up with this album - you can hear the potential on some of these songs, but they've been recorded terribly, and they've wasted their talents - Kirk Hammett with no solos, Hetfield with no decent rhythm parts, and Rob Trujillo - ROB F***ING TRUJILLO - without a single bassline you can actually hear properly. Only Lars manages to show his skills, but on a kit that sounds as though it's made of plastic.

I just hope that the next one they do has some of the aggression of this one, combined with the production of "the black album" and the energy of "...Puppets". THAT would be an album worth getting.

I'm waiting for the debut album from The Darkness (glam rock crossed with Queen, anyone? ), which is out on Monday. Stand-out track - "Get Your Hands Off My Woman Motherf***er". Awesome - get it or miss out on something spectacularly good.  Then the next big one is the new Iron Maiden album, Dance of Death, which is out in september. It's gonna kick ass...

Other cool bands you might not have heard of:
:yes:Morcheeba - wierd, but sweet-as to listen to...
:yes:Hundred Reasons - the best British band for years. Heavy and happy - what more could you want?
:yes:The Wildhearts - this band make the loudest f***ing noise I've ever heard. I was deaf for three days after going to their show at Cardiff university.  They're an awesome bunch of crazy Geordies, and really nice people, too!

Check 'em out, you won't be sorry.
Any fool can pull a trigger...

What to check out by Falconer? Hrm, probably anything off their first album(s/t). My fave off the album is "Entering Eternity," my girlfriend's fave is "Wings of Serenity." Though, truth be told, pretty much everything off their first album is probably excellent(I've heard a lot, but not most. They get no air time in the U. S.).

I've heard a variety of opinions on their second album(Chapters From a Vale Forlorn), and they are basically either: "it's ub0rz suckz0rs" or "it's ub0rz rockz0rs." I've only heard one song off of it("The Clarion Call"), so I'm not going to say one way or another at this point in time, other than that I enjoyed that song.

As for the band itself? They're a Swedish power-metal band composed of two former members of MITHYON(from what I understand they were a pretty good nordic/rock band) and two other members whose names I have utterly and completely forgotten. I'd have to say the only thing that kinda, barely, sucks about Falconer is that they have no intention of touring.(*sniffle*)

Dear God no, The Darkness are ****ing awful and the hype about them just makes me hate them more. A bunch of spandex jumpsuit wearing, ego driven pricks with a handful of re-cycled T-Rex riffs and a dash of 80's hair metal do not a good band make.

Morcheeba were good, Hundred Reasons are ok now, but when they were unsigned they were awesome, real balls to the floor metal. They appear to have softened up now though, sadly.

The Wildhearts haven't ever made a bad song.

As for more UK bands, some of the best one's no longer exist such as  Earthtone9 , Pitchshifter , Medulla Nocte and Mahumodo .

However, the 80's Matchbox B-Line Disaster are still about and they are ****ing awesome.

That was more aimed at the fact that Metallica never let the bass riff run free from the guitar riff. I don't think I've ever heard a nice little bass lick or anything in a Metallica song. Personally I always thought they were an average overrated band with a few very good songs, but because of the musical climate in the mid to late eighties, them, Slayer and Anthrax became famous.

Um, he didn't play on the album, so that's why you can't hear him.  I'm sure that he'll be heart-changingly loud Live though.

And Yes, it definately could have used solo's, many more solo's.

And poor steve was limited by time constraints, and he would have blown the crowd to Vega and back if he had played One.  Keep in mind, the hardest stuff this crowd had listened to for the most part is some punk.  Steve has 500 watts of Yorkville goodness to back him up.  The only thing that could make that tower better is an 11!

Well, off to go see Junior, this cool little local band my drum teacher is a part of.  later!
