Anyone interested in MVE2AVI? :D
Stealth: no. There was an MVE2AVI program people knew about, but it only worked on other kinds of Interplay MVEs, not FS ones.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

It means the MVE codec was stripped from the released source code.

I thought about that but I wouldn't have expected the code to compile properly in that situation if the code just wasn't there. It could be that there's some code masking where the MVE code should be and allowing it to compile regardless but then that would defeat the purpose of having the MVE directive in the Makefile. The other alternative is that the code (or something like it, like the MVE code used in D2X, whose movies work perfectly in Linux, even with subtitles, being hacked that extra mile to work with FS movies) is there and it's compiling but I'm doing something wrong in the placement of the actual movie files and as a result they're not working. I admit, the former is the most likely but I don't understand why they'd add an MVE directive for something that doesn't work and is probably never going to work.

Did you never play Freespace 1?

And Admiral LSD, I'm not even pretending to understand what you posted - it's faar too late for that - but I just want to clarify that the MVE codec/format is the touchy thing with Interplay, not the FS1/2 movies themselves. So as long as no one gets any bright ideas about including MVE2AVI in the SCP, we should be fine converting the movies to AVI and playing them in-game with calls to AVI playing functions. :)

EDIT: Sheepy, I'll get right on it. :)

It's the same for Descent 2 though, isn't it? Any third party program that decodes the D2 movies would be just as illegal as MVE2AVI, MVEEXTRACT etc then, right?

Because you aquired them under the counter from people/places that still had them. Interplay issued Descent Network with a "cease and desist" letter and they haven't carried it since AFAIK.

Interplay has lost all creditability  so why should they be insistent on anything related to the games at all whether they hold rights or not - Volition on the other hand is different and I think they are the only ones who have a say..anyhow interplay to caught up in fixing themselves ...
