Anyone interested in MVE2AVI? :D
I just found it, I'll give my FS2 discs a try.
Don't expect me to upload anything, 'cause I'm on ISDN...
Well, maybe if I manage to put together smg. with very good quality.

I know that, but I also know that the plain-jane MVE2AVI util is linked on a lot of sites, while the MVE2AVI Freespace build can only be found on this one site. Ergo, you apparently tried the non-FS build, since the colossus movie converted for Spicious. :D

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

I just now tried this thingy on the FS2 intro cutscene - and it worked - or at least I think so, but it's 4 gigs big. :eek2:

Just how, exactly might I go about compressing this with the DivX or Xvid codec?

Ok, now I have a 14.5MB version of the Colossus movie. I'm making a start on the intro. Anyone willing to host them?

I think I'm getting somewhere.

I'll see if I can post this on one of my website servers when I'm done.

Edit: I got the FS2 intro into a ~90 MB .avi (which started at 4 gigs) using the latest DivX codec. The only thing I find wrong with it is that there is some high-pitched beeping at the very beginning of the video, but other than that it looks ok.

Might I add, this site was instrumental in providing the utilities for the compressing process. Definately worth a visit.

I had the same problem with the intro. I did manage to get it down to 34.5MB using DivX and mp3.

I have ENDPART1.mve around 19,6 Mbytes and the performance is still satisfactory.

Hmm, how do you get Virtual Dub to use mp3 instead of whatever it's currently using?

it's in one of the menus, you can select the sound codec.

Got it  The total video is now 37.6 MB. It'll take about an hour and 30 minutes before I can have it fully uploaded because the server I'm using is being slow today. :doubt:

On the upside, I got rid of that annoying beep at the beginning by making some edits in goldwave. :)

Edit: Now that I've got the hang of this, I just converted the endgame for FS1. It doesn't take very long at all. I got it down to 17.3 MB. I'm still uploading the other one so I'll get this one up as soon as I can.

Edit2: FS1 Command Briefing cutscene converted. And Bosch's last cutscene. :D

Just my luck - the server I was uploading to doesn't allow large files. :doubt:

Anybody else have any suggestions to keep these hosted?

Most of us probably won't have an MP3 compressor available (the Fraunhofer MP3 codec that comes with Windows is decode-only). I recommend the LAME ACM codec. It's basically just the LAME MP3 codec, implemented as an Audio Compression Manager component.

Get it here:

Joey_21 Did you use a 2 pass encoding?

For me that was the best and easiest method to shrink the files.

joey, the cutscenes look very good, but the sound in the endgame of FS1 is garbled.
