Xvid, so we don't run into any copyright crapola. It may not be quite as good as the very latest DivX, but it's more than good enough. :)

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Funny thing is I have no idea how I managed to get the sentence to repeat itself like that. :D

That's likely to be quite slow to download but it's better than nothing. Do you already have the movies?
I could put the movies on my webserver if necessary. Bear in mind it runs off a 1MBit ADSL line and I will reserve the right to throttle connections when they interfere with my housemates' gaming and my webcomic browsing.

Got plenty disk space though.

No, but once I know my Windows install is secure against WMFs again I can convert them in a couple of hours.

Re: Anyone interested in MVE2AVI? :D
question, which is the best space/quality codec out there? in that i mean, which one will have the best picture for the least space
Unlike what was previously said (DivX & Xvid), the best is H.264. For audio, use AAC. How to play? Get CCCP.
But why the CCCP and not some other codec pack?

And encoding?
x264
AAC

Edit: And unlike many of you may think, H.264/x264 does not REQUIRE you to encode HD-quality video which would result in amazing quality but would also require a lot of CPU performance to decode it.

Yes, but does the FSOpen engine support h.264 playback? And for the love of Pete, don't use AAC! What's wrong with plain MP3 or Ogg Vorbis?

It supports whatever Windows Media Player can play, and with right codecs it can play H.264 too. As H.264 and AAC is adopted by Apple, Mac users should have it easy too. Linux users knows where to get the codecs anyway.

And for the love of Pete, don't use AAC! What's wrong with plain MP3 or Ogg Vorbis?
Nothing wrong with AAC mate, its quite on-par with vorbis. MP3 has licensing problems as much as DivX does.

Don't you just love it when corperate greed ruins a good product?
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

Re: Anyone interested in MVE2AVI? :D
AAC, however, requires a license be purchased. Ogg Vorbis FTW. :)

I've toyed with .aac, and in my opinion a high quality .mp3 is better than that piece of Apple crap :p

.ogg on the other hand is a decent, and open, format ;)

I don't like to beat a dead horse, but I can give a 5 cents on this one:

Give it some time.
Xvid has been around now for quite a while. x264 is still very new.
Never use codec packs unless you know each and every single item inside and know that you need it.

On a different note:
Anyone ever took a look into Mplayer?
It's the ultimate movie player from the perspective of compability - and it's open source.

Which is exactly why I can only recommend CCCP out of the numerous other codeck packs. If you're in doubt, read the link I posted in the post you quoted.
