This isn't something I'd normally bother posting here but as the nForce/nForce2 chipsets have been cursed with rather dodgy drivers (which is a pity, as nVidia make a damn better chipset than either Via or SiS) I thought it would be a good idea to mention nVidia have just released a new set, v2.45, which claims to fix a lot of the problems the earlier kits had. The really dodgy part, the IDE driver, hasn't been released yet though so it still might be a good idea to sit on them for a couple of weeks. Download links (for Windows 2000/XP) can be found here:

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. What does ATI have in common with nForce? Isn't that the nVidia thing?

ATI drivers can have troubles (with the nforce) if you aren't careful, in this case you have to uninstall them, then install the nforce stuff, then install them again. Only applies to windows users.

Wait a sec, I haven't been keeping up on the latest in GFX cards... last I heard, Nvidia had the GeForce FX or something - the next level beyond the GF4. What's this nForce, a GPU? A driver set for both ATI and Nvidia cards?

The Nforce (and Nforce2) is a motherboard chipset that Nvidia made, it's thought by some to be the best AMD chipset out at the moment.

The Nforce2 features stuff like (it depends on the brand and model) built-in sound (SoundStorm 6-channel stuffs), integrated ethernet, integrated graphics (GeForce 4MX iirc), SATA Raid, and so on.

Now you're totally dropped off the sled if you didn't know what's nForce. nForce came late 2001 and nForce2 came late 2002.

A good chipset, but it surely is plagued by half-assed drivers, specifically the IDE driver. Hopefully NVIDIA will get it fixed soon for good of all nForce2 owners.

Funny thing is, the nForce 3 is an Opteron chipset. The K8 Crush is the Athlon 64 chipset. (I wonder if I'm the only one who finds this strange).

That's why I posted this here, I knew there were some people here who had nForce motherboards and would be able to benefit from it

This driver set is the one they claim will do that. It's why they're delaying the release of the IDE driver for a week or two, they want to be absolutely sure it'll work before they release it. I certainly hope they succeed, I'm starting to get sick of booting off this off-board ATA133 controller but as I don't really trust the 2.41 Windows IDE driver I'm using right now I'm between a rock and a hard place: Use the onboard ports and boot faster but run the risk of severe HDD corruption or use the offboard ports and not have the risk of data corruption but have to wait 60 seconds before the GRUB boot loader screen comes up and then another 30 seconds for the XP "progress bar" to disappear. It's like I'm running Windows 2000 all over again.

Are they planning to keep the Crush K8 moniker right up until release or are they going to officially launch it as "nForce 3 Lite" or something?

I'm thinking they're keeping the Crush K8 name. I've seen some pictures of the southbridge chip, and if you look at this pic of the Abit board, you'll see it lists the chipset as Crush K8. I'm betting this is a socket 939/940 board, judging by the FSB 800 listed in the specs. Might be referring to the hypertransport bus, though, in which case it might be a socket 754.

So much for a couple of weeks...

Yeah, the new nForce driver pack (3.13) is out now, complete with SW IDE driver. It's available at the usual place:

I'm stearing clear of these. They stopped my box booting after installation, so I'm back with 2.45. And yes, I unstalled the old ones first before anyone asks...

I just installed these and they're working great (on an EPoX 8RDA+). Granted, I'm using an off-board IDE controller to host my hard drive but I'm considering tempting fate later and moving my HDD to the on-board controller.

edit: I rearranged the IDE cables in my case to put the HDD on the onboard ATA133 controller and all seems well so far. My system no longer boots like it's running Windows 2000 and the drivers didn't fry the data on the drive.

I'll wait till the next time I format. I've done enough to tweak everything nicely right now.

It all works, except FS2 sound has popping and clicking sometimes.

I was about to say you should at least install the audio and audio control panel updates as these clear things up a whole lot compared with previous versions but then I remembered you use an Audigy so that probably won't help much...

I have a NF2 based motherboard (A7N8X) and have had a mixed experience with it; it is fast and stable (as far as games go), but buggy. There was an issue where the computer locks up on some hardware/BIOS configurations when restarting the machine through software (i.e. windows start menu, ctrl-alt-del, etc.). I also can't get the SBLive's SB16 emulation to work no matter what I try. Do they have a list of what was changed with this driver revision?

Additionally, I have encountered a problem where the hard drive stops running if the computer is not used for several hours, and I have to restart the machine to get it spinning again; not sure if this is related to the motherboard drivers, but I have turned off the all power management stuff I could find in windows and the BIOS setup program, and it still keeps happening.
