You realize any explanation of why it's funny is going to make it wholly unfunny? Why bother? If it's a rhetorical question, it's a pretty poor one.

I'd like to see them explain that to Environmental Services...

Basically, I'm just saying it seems kind of, well, stupid to me, but not in a funny way.

Massive electrical explosions, meanwhile.... :)

What a waste of whale, they taste pretty good.

That Fireworks thing is one of the best things I've ever seen.  <<;  Too bad about the cameraman though.  From the looks of that final explosion, he was a goner.

What's even more stupid is he saw the first big explosion and nearly got blown away by it and yet still kept filming instead of running for his life like any sane person would have.

I do like the fact that they play the explosion in slow motion and you can actually see the shockwave.

It wasn't eating whale meat that endangered whales, it was primarily the blubber industry of European cultures. It's rather similar to how the buffalo population decreased rapidly because of the European culture's rampant fur demands.

That may or may not be true, but the fact that they are now known to be endangered, but are still hunted for food in larger numbers is inexcusable. They wont even admit that they're doing it for food, hiding behind this "Scientific Research' bull****. Jesus it pisses me off.

Thats humans... Still, at least this beached whale was dead when they blew it up. (Yes, I do have a dim enough view of people to believe that someone.. somewhere.. would blow up a living, breathing whale).

As for the fireworks factory - very impressive!

To be honest, the killing of the Buffalo was more about denying the Native Americans their main food supply rather than a particular demand for the fur itself, but yes, whaling ships should be shot with a REAL harpoon on sight :)

Last I checked, only the Inuits hunted whales for food- and they did so above the table, in limited numbers, and in accordance with a tradition they'd had for hundreds of years before anyone else ****ed with it. Nobody, not nobody else hunts whales for the meat. Blubber, now, that's another story.

Buffalo were primarily a sport hunt. Their fur is pretty nasty, if you've ever seen it. You might be confusing 'em with beavers.

Incidentially, buffalo make excellent steaks and sausage.

The Japanese are wierd, dude. We're talking "nation that invented tentacle hentai" wierd. Not exactly representative of anyone else, except possibly pasty near-obsessive losers in America who'd start practicing auto-cannibalism if they heard it was big in Japan. Furthermore, they comprise a tiny tiny fraction of overall whalehunting.

Also, "link 2" makes no mention of hunting for meat. Not that it really matters, but it's best to, you know, link to pages that are actually relevant.

Further investigation reveals that Norwegian whalers sell their whale meat to markets within their own borders, for their own consumption, and call it "commercial". Japanese whalers sell their whale meat to markets within their own borders, for their own consumption, and call it "scientific". So what's the difference?

See it's not just the japanese that eat it. The Norwegians are pretty weird too.

Faroes Islanders eat pilot whales.  That's one.
