The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says it is studying whether or not the device is safe for consumers to use without a license. According to their website, the phone is currently being tested on people of various height and weight, including children and animals.

“If people want to talk on the phone and stun people at the same time, that’s their business,” said CPSC commissioner Mary Sheila Gail, “We just want to make sure [the phone gun] is safe, and if that means requiring the consumer to get a license, then so be it.”

Because, of course, you need a license to own a gun, and no-one ever misuses them.........

This is the worst idea ever.

I'm sorry - I'm all for it in the sense of my own personal defence. But do I trust the ****ers that run around my town thinking they're gods gift to humanity and starting fights with anyone who looks at them funny or dares to wear a piece of dark/non-brand clothing?

Hell no.

And of course if these get released in the UK there'll be all kinds of laws - accidents and other BS regarding phones. Does Nokia really think that some tit won't get boozed up in some club - take a disliking to the guy next to him and then just zap the guy from 10 feet away in a crowd? You'd never be able to tell who did it if he ripped the wires free and left the club... and there are so many more applications for stupidity.

Meh.. Nice one Nokia.

I think in theory it's a great idea.  Women could have protection of a stun gun without having to buy another product.  But, there's a lot of kids here in Miami that like to buy the latest and the greatest and went crazy with those camera phones.  I mean, REALLY crazy.  I can just imagine little 15 year old's bored at the movies or the mall stunning people for the giggles.  Or in fights...

If they're going to be selling these, I suggest they sell these at a really high, disgusting price so it wouldn't be something a kid could just buy...  Although, most kids just have their parents buy them.

*ahem* PEOPLE kill people. Guns are deadweight without people.

Semantics, yes, but it's an important difference. Here in Israel, where everyone (more or less) goes through the army, and hence learns to treat weapons with the respect and caution they deserve, there are virtually no accidental deaths due to firearms. Also, because bearing arms is legal (permit required), crime such as breaking and entering or dark alley assault is extremely low - you never know if your victim has a gun.

The conclusion is simply that with the proper training and respect, a society can often function better when guns are allowed. After all, if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

i'd tend to agree.. semi-auto firearms were banned in australia after the port-arthur massacre.. irony is, that i still hear about firearm-related offences just as often in the news..:doubt:

and dont make me quote switzerlands record.

in Switzerland, since pre WW2, all males were issued (nowadays assault) rifles for their required militia service and were required to keep them at home, yet little crime exists there.

Its often speculated this was one of the reasons hitler allied with the swiss instead of attacking them.

However if guns are banned it becomes much harder for gangs of 15 years olds to get them.

Basically there are some countries where guns can be owned responsibly by almost everyone and the problems are low. Switzerland has a higher gun ownership ratio than the US. Canada also has plenty of guns. The simple fact is that guns are treated properly in those countries.

However the UK and USA are not such countries.  There are large swathes of people who shouldn't be allowed near guns in both countries. The UK responded to the problem by banning them completely. The US continues to ignore the problem and hopes it gets better.  I very much doubt it will so I for one agree with Aldo that getting rid of them completely was a very smart move.

It hasn't resulted in a huge rise in muggings or burglaries either.

@Drew. I ask you this. What do you think would happen in the USA if every male was issued an assult rifle?
