I got it. I installed it. I decided to give it a try.
COMMAND.COM ERROR HAHAHAHA !  Oh, ****e. So, I guess it does not like me, because I don't... err. Command.com? That's right, I don't command.com it to work! Or something.

So Dosbox 0.61 did not do it for me, tips? :(

If I download the Quake 1 remake version, is there some sort of manual type thing, because I've never played the original.

One more question, does the current version (of the remake) have singleplayer, or is it strictly multiplayer?

Frankly, the X-Com games hark back to the age when games were designed to be challenging rather than designed to be beaten.

I'm sad to say that I've yet to beat TFTD (and probably won't until a remake is finished) although I got fairly far into the game.  I love being able to destroy walls.  Nothing like blowing a hole through the side of a sub and then tossing in some sonic pulsars.

A friend of mine got X-COM to load on his XP Pc. I think he disabled graphics acceleration. Don't quote me on that, will enquire further.
If you want to be ready for Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn, then download and play the prologue first.

Here,

http://www.wcsaga.com/downloads/files/download/releases-prologue-setup-exe.html

Then, while waiting for the Darkest dawn, Download Starshatter 4.02

You 'll understand why once you have.

yeah, that's how you make it work in XP, go into dxdiag, and disable directdraw accelleration.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

IIRc, there's windows versions of all 3 X-Coms (the ones by the gollop bros.) around.
It came from outer space! What? Dunno, but it's going back on the next flight!

I never beat TFTD before either, but in my case it was because there's a bug in the research tree which can make it impossible to research some stuff required to complete the game. :(

I'm now playing it over again, and I'm following the research tree so I don't get stuck.  Link is below if anyone else needs it.
Spoiler:
This diagram displays all of the items you can research in TFTD.  I'd advise not looking at this if you don't want the game spoiled, unless you've been unlucky enough to get yourself into the unwinnable state and have to restart.

Oh that happened to me in my first attempt to beat the game too.  I screwed up and couldn't get the alien subs nor could I get molecular control.  Made me really mad.

The second time I did a lot better but stopped playing sometime in the middle.

The third attempt I got the furthest and was doing quite well when the aliens decided to launch major counterattacks while simultaneously attacking ports.  Guess who's bases got caught with only the "B" team guarding during a base attack ><

I can tell you why but I don't know how to fix it. ;) The URL's colour is governed by this page's style for URL links, which is not over-ridden by the font colour setting. So the URL will come out the colour it would have been rendered originally. I think. :)

Yay, thanks to you guys I finally got it working. Nice.

So far I've been able to crush one floater base - piece of cake - and annihilate few terror attacks. My group is now armed with heavy plasma, blaster gun and laser rifles (their accuracy really is unmatched, ). I just got flying suit production started, so really my only problem at the moment is lack of funds. Must sell UFO navigation and power source, too bad. Mind probes are worth TON of cash, though.
lol wtf

Start manufacturing laser canons and later on fusion ball launchers - they sell for a good profit.

A substitute if you can't manufacture either would be medikits or motion scanners.
