Jerusalem World's First WiFi City

[q]JERUSALEM TO BECOME WORLD'S FIRST WI-FI CITY

"Jerusalem rebuilt as a city that brings about connectivity" is a very rough translation of Psalm 122,3 - but it could be coming true, as modern-day city fathers prepare Jerusalem to become the first city in the world to enable full wireless connectivity to the internet.

The Municipality of Jerusalem, together with Intel and Compumat Computers, has embarked on a project to make Israel's capital the world's first wireless fidelity-enabled (WiFi) city, according to a Globes report.  The organizers expect that within two years, users in most areas of the city will be able to surf the internet wirelessly.  The WiFi connection will be free of charge throughout at least the first year.  The WiFi transmitters installed throughout the city will enable an internet connection of up to 54 megabits per second (Mbps) at a distance of 1000-1600 feet, Globes reports.

The Jerusalem WiFi Project will be implemented in two stages. The first stage will be the installation of hot spots - where WiFi hardware is installed and user reception is optimal - at central points throughout the city.  These will include Ben-Yehuda Street in downtown Jerusalem, the Hutzot HaYotzer artist quarter, the Nahalat Shiva neighborhood, Safra Square, the Malcha shopping mall, and Emek Refaim St. The second stage will see parks, schools, government offices and the Hebrew University on Mt. Scopus go wireless.

One new Jerusalemite ecstatic about the news is Natan Gesher, who carried his new Apple Powerbook with him when he arrived last Wednesday with 400 other North American immigrants on a Nefesh B'Nefesh Aliyah flight.  "Before I arrived," he told INN's Ezra HaLevi, "I had friends scour the city for WiFi hot-spots.  Wireless internet was actually the only thing between me and a perfect absorption.  I'm overjoyed that the greatest city on earth has decided to get connected."[/q]

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

How long will that take to be fully implemented? Around here we have sparse hotspots, but it's nothing official - mostly just bars and bookstores setting them up.
Probably away. Contact through email.

They got some at some Starbucks here in Houston, although its mostly experimental. You will find them in good quality hotels as well.

By the way, what does it say about the final Apocalypse in the bible? I have read revelation but never really understood all of it. I know the final battle is supposed to happen at Armageddon but between which countries?

uhh, Gank seems to know alot about that stuff, Sandie also. Sufficed to say, its all very vague and open to (mis)interpretation. No actual countries are indicated as far as I know, only a description of the factions, from which we are left to infer who the prophecy is talking about.

Yea. Very vague. Recent events lead me to believe that the end of the world might be when the entire muslim world tries to destroy Israel. Although I heard somewhere that Revelation might have been referring to the fall of the Roman Empire, not to the end of the world. I kind of doubt that though.

The Bible is like a fairgroundf fortune teller. It keeps **** vague so the crap it coughs up will fit the life of just about any person, state or mythical beast.

It's actually quite a good idea. Tell people that when things the Bible is against start happening, the world will end. That way, they'll keep reverting to the teachings of the Bible every time there's a little war in some piss-poor country.

ahem... that made me laugh for some reason.

We have wi-fi spots all over uni campus this summer, but the network admins have blocked access due to security risks..... er, I'm still trying to figure out why they bothered puttin the transmitters in.

IIRC, it is believed by many Biblical scholars that the "Babylon" referenced throughout the book is actually Rome.

Ha><><0R!

Man, I've gotta move out there now. I can just see it, me cruising down Jerusalem sidestreets in a box truck with an internal generator and computer rig, trolling for credit card numbers and bank accounts as I go. I always wanted to get rich without actually working. Anyway, gonna be a crazy few years out there.

...and behold the seventh firewall was thrown open, and there did come the script kiddie of the apocalypse. Unleashed upon the ether, the destroyer came; a creature by the name of D-DoS-ifer.
and there was much gnashing of teeth and throwing of joysticks and typing of WTF?!? as the ping leapt skyward.
Then God came and said, "may the worthy be blessed for I am root". D-DoS-ifer was cast down and broken upon /dev/null. Then God reached forth his arm and did trcroute. God proclaimed 'may the ping be on earth as it is in heaven; Pretty low.' and so it was done.
And there was much rejoicing as the angel of FBI hauled the script kiddie away for 5 to 7 in state.
