I got my Karate Green Belt. Yay me!
As Skullar said, martial arts don't mean **** in a real fight.

Try some of that spin-kick **** on a nightclub bouncer and see how fast he breaks your leg.

Muscle and weight will beat skill and speed any day.

And as for the bamboo thing: The cartalidge of the throat is very strong, so it won't tear under gradually increased pressure from a sharp object. That's why you need to slice or stab in order to cut someone's throat. A simple punch, if it's hard enough, will kill anyone.

......er.....Really, very untrue.....as reading any military theory book or witnessing any such incidents will show you. Being strong doesn't mean a thing if you can't hit someone, and being strong doesn't mean you know how to use your strength.....

...also untrue, if you strengthen the muscles protecting the throat, you'd have to punch ridiculously hard to get through the absorbtion effect of the muscle. The only way you could kill someone with a single blow with this is if they were totally relaxed, only then would you be certain of crushing the larynx.

[color=66ff00]Muscular people are much easier to hurt than fat or skinny people so people that work out are at a disadvantage in terms of resilience. Few people attack me as I'm a bony bugger and even landing a hit can hurt (elbows make great defence).

Anyhow if martial arts were good for nothing then they wouldn't have progressed to the point they are at today; a myriad of styles. If they were truely no use then the people who literally relied on them on a day to day basis in the pre projectile weaponary era to protect themselves and their families would not have lasted long to pass the arts on.

Their longevity and diversity is a monument to how practical they are.

My little 7 year old cousin showed me the meaning of skill over brute strenght. He was showing me some of his spinning kick moves (he's learning Tae Kwando - Yellow belter) when he accidentally hit my jewels. That perfect spin kick (how ever misaimed) floored me in less then 2 seconds :P

On another note, I have seen a special on National Geographic about Shaolin monks. Their members have been training since they are able to walk and have some really insane excercises and a steady diet of veggies. The result they all look really scrawny but just looking how they train their bodies (they hang themselves on their necks for hours/ smash her heads on sandbags for days/ smash their hands in everyway possible) I'd be willing to bet that they would really be more then a match to those big brawlers.

Of course there is always Gacie Jujitsu :D

PS: Samurai dont entriely rely on their swords, that's what jujitsu is for :)

[color=66ff00]No need to fear me, I study martial arts primarily as an interesting method to train my body, the fact that I can use it to protect myself and my friends is a bonus. :)

I've talked my way out of more fights which as the best practitioner will tell you is a much better victory.

What would that prove? Where would it get me in life? Nowhere! So there is no point in fighting just to see who is better. only point to fighting is to survive. Its not fun to fight, and its not fun talking about what could happen so lets not go there.

Fact of the matter is though, i dont care who would win between me and a monk. Im not in the art to kick butt, im in it to learn. Im in it to make my life more rounded. I learned it so if any point in my life i was physically threatened i could handle it.

Ive never really had to use it and that makes me very proud. I learned how to reason my way out of physical conflicts and learned that a life without violence is a happy one. The art bettered my life, made me more discplined, more appreciative of the delicateness of life. Ive also learned to respect the art i joined and all arts outside of my own. I learned to respect people, and learned that through physicial conditioning i can live longer.
So the art isnt all about kicking butt. Whether or not a monk could kick our butt is moot. Fact is the Monk would not resort to violence unless it was his last resort for his own survival, so your statement couldnt be further from reality. Maybe we would spar to learn off each other and to teach each other but we wouldnt resort to seeing who is better then who. That is just a ridiculous fight to fight.

So when someone has achieved something in life, try not to tear them down and say what they did sucked worse then something else. All it does is bring negativity to a thread, and what purpose does that serve?
Lets just all be friends and not attack our achievements. Usually when people attack others achievements it means they are not happy with their own. Keep that in mind when critisizing.
:)

Setekh, no need to fear us martial arts people, we are the least violent people you will probably meet.

can't remember the last time I was in a bona-fide fight. School probably. As Maeglamor said, I do Karate 'cos it's much more interesting than simply going to the gym.

At my place, people get hurt more often playing football than through sparring/drills etc.

you guys do  know I was only joking about the beat downs right ?:D

Magatsu: Nice work! :) What sort of level is that? (There's so many different grading systems that I've got no idea what's what.....) I study Lau Gar Kung Fu myself, and I'll be doing my green sash exam in September (FYI, that's the 4th grade, half-way to the first Black sash). How long have you been training?

 Very true. If you're any kind of martial artist, you try to avoid fighting if at all possible. You'd certainly never start a fight, though you'd be capable of ending one rather quickly... :D
