Any advice?

I'm looking to chuck out my (going on 5 years old) crap-as-hell case.  Laregly because my PC is overheating a lot, it seems, and I have no space to add a case fan.  Also because it'll only get worse if I add a second HD, which I desperately need to do.

I'm looking at http://www.dabs.com/uk/ProductView?quicklinx=2SJT or http://www.dabs.com/uk/ProductView?quicklinx=3179 at the mo*, but this is completely new to me..... I'm hoping to spend less than 70 quid  (ideally much less).

*yeah, I know they're the same company, but I don;t have a brand preference of indeed any knowledge to form one.  The latter was on special offer ;)

Chieftec Dragon. I got one, and my system temps dropped by about 20 degrees.

Hold on, and I'll get a link.

There y'are. You'd need a seperate PSU, and (tries to remember)... four 80mm fans, but Ebuyer sells them for about 50p a throw.

And AFAIK, this is basically the same case with a different fascia, but is a damn sight cheaper

I've got an Antec Sonata Case, which I'm damn too lazy to find a link for. If you want a case for OC, this isn't for you, but if you want noise reduction, this baby is a godsend.

Edit : just cause i'm in a good mood, here's a link.

[color=66ff00]Also have a Dragon, a nice purple one, built like a tank and brilliantly designed, I was so impressed with it.

My mate bought one soon after. :)

BTW if you do buy one get them to send you accurate colour pics as the new ones aren't quite the same colour. THe old black ones were pitch black, the new ones are dark grey and it doesn't look as good IMHO.

I have a Chieftec Matrix, kinda like a Dragon with lots of slits in the front for ventilation and more places to mount fans.

Hmm...one thing, though - and this will seem a daft question to 90% of people :) - how are the fans connected to the power, because the only piccies I've seen use the PSU connectors.... and I only have about 2 of those free, so can you get a splitter?

Yup.

Although, iirc, the fans I got had splitters attached.

  • huh?.. Who?.. hey you kids, git off me lawn!
Lian-Li's a good sturdy brand of cases.
most have a separate hard-drive bay, just behind the twin fans that have in the front of the case.
and they're quiet.

oh, and there's another outlet fan near where the CPU usually is.. so it keeps my athlon reasonably cool.

Quiet is not something I bother about, and just as well.
Having... nine fans in here means it sounds like something Frank Whittle would be proud of.

I heavily second Turnsky's Lian-Li recommendation - they're widely accepted to be the sweetest cases out there - and they follow the less is more school of design thought. :D

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill
