OK, here's the deal:

I got my shiny new computer bits in the week. I've put it together, but I can't install windows XP on it. Win98 installs fine, but XP won't. When installing, I press F6 to use drivers for my SATA hard drive. Setup then carries on to the next step, but then coughs up the following:

"Could not copy blahblah.sys

Press enter to retry, Esc to skip....." etc.

I've tried it with several different drivers, and I've tried both controllers on the mobo (it's an Asus A8V, with a Via controller in the SBridge, and a Promise 20378 controller elsewhere on the board).

It's proving to be a pain in the arse, and I've been stuck for 2 days now. If anyone has any ideas, it'd be most helpful.

Oh, the specs are as follows:

Athlon64 3500+ (S. 939)
Asus A8V Deluxe mobo
1Gb DDR ram
HIS Excalibur Radeon X800 Pro VIVO
Sony CDRW
Maxtor 160Gb SATA HDD

Probably a CRC error. The disk might be damaged.

Wait, Windows XP *needs* drivers to access a SATA drive?! Why???

That is so lame!!!
I can understanding it needing drivers to access the extra features SATA has over regulat ATA, but not for just formatting and copying files to it!!!

Man, that's wierd. I remember having similar problems a few years back, but then I was installing Win2k onto a SCSI setup (SCSI... man... haven't heard that for a while). So what happens if you skip the SATA driver setup and try to pass it off as a normal ATA drive?

Cyker: Yeah it is a bit dumb so is the fact that you still need a floppy disk drive on a modern day PC of any sort.

That happened to my friend when he was building his AMD 64 setup. If I see him this week I will ask him what he did to fix it.

Well, I got it sorted. Cheers for all the advice, though. I installed Win98, then put XP straight over the top of it without defining new partitions. So this leads me to another question - how do I change the existing partition (drive C:, FAT32, whole disk), to a primary partition and a few logical drives (C: 10GB, D: 50GB, E:100GB) without wiping the whole thing and starting again? If there's a way to do this, It'd be great, as I rushed through the install to get it up and running ASAP, but forgot about partitioning....

Doesn't work. It says "no drives detected, setup cannot continue" , and won't let me do anything....

What's even more retarded is the fact that Windows 98 had no problems at all, even though it came out 7 years before SATA!

Cheers - it is rather fast. Can't wait to try Far Cry on it (and Doom3 when it arrives) . It's cleaned me out, though, so no more toys for me for a while....

There are some utilities out there that'll let you resize FAT32 partitions.
