Post what type of sword (or other non-modern weapon) you would get if you had the money.

This Iaito is rather nice:

But so is this longsword....

I like the Iaito...

Aragorn's elven knife isn't bad either.

Scimitars are always badass too.
Wash: This landing's gonna get pretty interesting.
Mal: Define "interesting".
Wash: *shrug* "Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die"?
Mal: This is the captain. We have a little problem with our entry sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then... explode.

That or the Katana. I actually held one of those once. It was amazingly light weight.
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

I'll generally take any weapon, except for Japanese swords - they are nice, and light, but the actual damage potential of them stinks compared to other weapons.  A katana slash probably would not even be able to cut through a thin mail shirt.

I've got a bit of a collection - A replica High Middle Ages longsword, a replica late-Roman short sword, an actual World War II-issue Nepalese Khukri, and a half dozen daggers and large knives.  But my personal favorite item I own is this

Not a very light or 'elegant' weapon but still fun.  If you can get used to controlling the weight.  It is a bit hard to stop a swing of this thing at first.  But doubly dangerous - it can function as a sledgehammer, or the spike can be rammed through a six inch or so piece of wood or a thin piece of metal.

Katana aren't designed to cut armor. They're designed to cut flesh, and have no equals in that arena.

If I get a sword, I want a Scottish Claymore.  42 inches of steel blade.  With a grip large enough that you could get a good powerful swing

You realize that any tank, even a Panzer, is still considered a modern weapon, correct?

would a flint-lock pistol be a modern-weapon?

A flint-lock pistol has so little accurate range it's not even funny...

If not a sword, the English Longbow or a Mongol Composite bow would be quite a weapon too (too bad there'd be no way for be to pull a real one without extensive training).

A Medieval War-Hammer (the thing varus posted), or a pair of these:

Or maybe a proper War-Hammer, like the thing the Germanic Chief had at the beginning of Gladiator.

Personally, I'll stick with either a Katana, for non-armoured opponents, or a flail or mace for armoured ones ;)

As for Bows, the Welsh Longbow is the one you want, best bow ever made, shot by the best Bowmen who ever lived.

This longbow resides in my possession.  I once split a 1" wooden rod with two arrows in a row with it, very nice shooting.  Unfortunately I'm badly out of from and my arrows are all misspined from being shot too many times so I can't hit anyhting anymore.

A Gladius

Originating from Spain, the Romans chose this for their standard foot soldier battle sword. It's short, strong & chisel tipped to pierce any armor. A thrusting weapon that can also parry devastating blows. Used by the Roman army for hundeds of years.
