Iron Duke WIP - Part Deux
As the previous thread about this ship (here) is now languishing down on page 3/4, and had turned into a discussion of 3D programs, I thought I'd create a new one rather than bump it after a couple of weeks. :)

Anyway, here are some more shots of the Iron Duke class destroyer, showing off the new bits on the bow, the general detail on the main hull, and the improved superstructure.

I still need to redo the engines, as they look like bricks at the moment. I'd be open to any suggestions, as I'm not going to start them yet - still more to do to the hull first, including detailing the underside properly, adding a ventral superstructure, and altering the stern (I'm not happy with it at the moment).

Details such as sensor spikes and antenna will be assymetrical, so they'll be added last of all - I work on half the model and mirror it at the moment. There'll be sensor spikes on the front of that bowsprit thingy, and there'll be antennae and aerials on the masts and superstructure. There will also be another sensor array on one side of the bow, and a large beam cannon on the other. Main turret battery will be along the sides (those long shapes in the middle), and flak battery will be beside the superstructure at the bows and bridge.

Comments and critiques welcome as always. Cheers! :)

How about adding another shallower engine slung underneath, then have its "pod" (for lack of a better term) continue forward on so it extends halfway along the neck on its underside.  The front of this extension would be the fighterbay entrance... assuming that you plan on including a figtherbay (this is a destroyer after all) and assuming you haven't already added one in.  The main engines need to be sleeker and more rouneded.  Use Hecate's for inspiration.

Get rid of the penis head bow, and put something blockier, IMHO.

It'll have a fighterbay, but only a small one. My vision of the post-Capella fleet is one of powerful anti-ship destroyers with heavy guns and few attack craft, supported by dedicated tactical/escort carriers. I was planning to do something similar to your suggestion, actually - a smallish superstructure on the underside, with the fighterbay at the front of it, and an auxiliary engine at the back. I don't know about extending it that far forward, though...

As for the engines, yeah - they'll be a lot smoother and sleeker - probably slightly longer and thinner, and extending down further as well.

You and your phallic obsession.... :p

I'm not changing the shape of the bow drastically again - it took me hours to get it looking like that! It'll be slightly blockier once I add armour plates to it, and get the other bits on there. There'll be various gubbins around the place as well...

its OK, but bows are the HARDEST part about a ship to do.

besides, i understand the 'i worked on this for hours, ITS STAYING!' attitude...

Actually, the edges on your Hecate engines are a bit sharper than I forsee for this WIP.  The "head" section is smoothed quite a bit, so the rest of the model should follow this element.

You should be used to it by now. Half of the HLP population are penis-obsessed freaks. I don't want to know what kind of pictures they all have sitting on their HD's.:p

Nice ship. It reminds me of a Murphy class destroyer from Secret Ops.

Heh - I'll try. Never textured anything before, though, so I've no idea what it'll look like. Hell, this is my first model! I'm just happy it's gone down so well with you lot ;)

Lynx: Don't I know it! Scary people. :nervous: BTW, what's a Murphy class destroyer look like? I googled Secret Ops, but I don't have any WC games, so I can't play it...

Here is it. Of course the desings are different but the overall setup is the same.

Ahhh... Yeah, I can see the similarities. Thanks. Possibly not the best colour scheme though...

Actually you could; secret ops is a free stand-alone game.  HOTU has the campaigns, and a link to the actual game.
who needs a signature? ;)
It's not much of an excuse for a website, but my stuff can be found here

Yeah, Secret Ops is free available. Though you have to register on secretops.com which doesn't exist anymore. But there's a keygenerator here.

There's also a great mod out there available on HOTU, called "Unknown Enemy" and another one coming out at December 23rd called "Wing Commander: Standoff", which is located here .

[EDIT] If you just play the mods you won't need the key.

I'd be inclined to give the "neck" a waist of some kind.

maybe he means so it would get skinnier at one point then go back as opposed to remaining straight the whole time...?
