I liked the second one. Maybe it's just because I saw it first. Oh well, at least Zero seems good.

The second one was more scifi-ish then anything. It was cool, but only after I watched it twice and figured out the entire purpose of the story This is one of those movies that makes you go 'WTF!?' after the first time you watched it. Most people wouldn't watch it again, but I have a habit of wanting to understand something so I watched it again. The second time you'll notice the smaller details that turn the entire plot inside out. I enjoyed figuring it out.

The ending was corny though.

I think it would have been infinitely better if they had simply ended it right before the last scene. So much so that whenever I rewatch it I simply stop watching the film at that point. That makes two films I've seen that have a demented final scene which practically ruins the whole film.

I don't like 'WTF' movies.

I ****ing hated Solaris.

It's plot is that of a thousand other low-budget sci-fi movies: People stuck on space-station, bad things happen, new guy shows up as central character to find out what happened, bad things get worse.

But it made so little ****ing sense by the end that I was just sat there squinting at the screen going "Eh?".

It was just one big puzzle. If you don't like puzzles, you won't like the movies.

Besides, Nicole DeBoer played in part 1. And since she played in Trek, the movie automatically rocks!

Solaris made me go WTF, but not necessarily in a bad way. It tooks some figuring out, but at least I could see the meaning of it...I think.

I had read about some of the creatures in Solaris(the book) as well as seen some artist renditions.  The title refers to the planet, which is basically a titanic mass of sentient living material that can break sections of itself off and act as independant organisms for a time, though the subset creatures are true metamorphs.  They still look like the material the planet is composed of.  Kind of a pariwinkle-gray with maybe a bit of gold highlight.  This wasn't touched on in the film and it goes a long way to explaining what's going on.  They made Solaris as a Psychological Thriller as opposed to the Sci Fi Mystery I've always understood it to be.

Well, it was based on a book by Stanislaw Lem, who was deeply contemptuous of conventional science fiction for its lack of psychological depth, so I would be willing to bet that the makers of the film at least had the right idea.

I didn't bother, but the mrs watched it, and was wtf? at the end, so I saved myself some wasted time.....

All the Cube stuff is bizarre - it just seems to run aimlessly along with random death, then just finish.  I never liked the first one enough to watch the other(s).....

I like the original Cube, it's a little cliche though.  Cube 2 sucked greatly, everything about it was sub-par to even it's low budget predecessor.  Im definately gonna take a look at the new one.

Solaris with Clooney was utter and complete ****.

First of: Tarkovsky already made a spectacular and superb (albeit darn long and enduring) movie out of it, and has managed to go above and beyond the source material and instead trying to bring a very personal novel onto the screen he managed to create his own ethos out of the mythos.

Second: Lem's book is true much sci-fi (which we don't get anymore, what you get is tech-fan - technological fanatasy). No one really gives a damn about Solaris - a planet that shouldn't even exist since it's orbiting around a dual star syste - it's an oditty one of the great question marks that whisper to you that there's something to this place we call the world and the phenomenon life....

....but it is never explained! ...and it's right that way! A question tells more than a million answers.

It's not the nature of the planet that truely creeps into your mind or the whole mystery/murder thing: it is the fact that you finally realise you have no whatsoever grasp or certanity of WHAT makes you who you are, or a human for a simpler approach.

....those people who appear on the station - may very well be just as human as you.

The remake strongly drew on Tarkovsky's film but failed to remain true to either source and also utterly failed to draw any content of its own.

And I thought that the remake had that sense of perspective. I don't think they dwelt too much on the nature of the entity itself.

Solaris, the book, is one of the best sci-fi novels of all time. The recent movie didn't get close to conveying the idea behind it, neither visually nor story-wise. I watched the Russian movie (originally funded as a communist response to 2001: A Space Odissey, I heard) a long time ago, so I don't remember a lot of it.

A little bit of trivia: did you guys know that around the time when Solaris was published, lots of sci-fi fans from the west believed that the book (along all Stanislaw Lem books) had been written by a new computer the Soviets were developing? They thought it was a computer for a moon landing module, from the name "Lem"- Lunar Expedition Module. Well, Stanislaw was a real person in the end.
