Bit old I realise*, but you really have to be pissed off at these people - threatening to picket a charity, for ****s sake!

This same loonie fundie group (and they are) are against the Universal Charter of Human Rights (because it isn't specifically in the name of God), shops opening on sundays, believe social security " rewards fecklessness and isolation", is against gun control, characterises inflation as stealing, states that speed cameras are (literally) evil..... and that's just the particularly nutty bits.  (I think they also call hinduism as being in league with Satan somewhere)

But there's nary been a word said against them in the news or press.  I mean, I'm not a particularly (if atall) religious person, but is there any pretence in the Bible that justifies threatening a charity in order to stop it receiving a donation made in good faith?  Let's not forget that the money is coming from people who paid at a charity gala, knowing that money was going to go the charity.

*In case you're wondering, it was prompted by an opinion piece in the paper today... I never realised just how fundamentalist-nutcase this group truly was

Oh, and don't think i'm having a go at Christianity or whatnot, but I feel the need to vent my spleen.  Plus I know these people aren' reprensentative of their religion anyways - at least i hope not.

  • huh?.. Who?.. hey you kids, git off me lawn!
the world's full of twitchy, self righteous asshats.  some of these people don't realise that the money might even save somebody's life.

On top of everything I'll bet they didn't just donate the 3,000 themselves either.

Read their site;http://www.christianvoice.org.uk/

It's scary, but not in the way they intend.

Eh. Its their right to refuse it. Thats more or less the entire basis of religion as I understand it, that spiritual matters are of greater concern than wordly issues, both good and bad. So by their logic, their immortal soul takes precedent over cancer. I may not agree, but at least they stick to their guns, for what its worth. And lets be honest, its not like $3000 will end cancer forever. In fact, it probably can't even pay for the treatment of a single patient.

From their website:

"... and it insults Almighty God, the Lord Jesus Christ and the Christian faith.  It also (neat point for human rights aficionados) insults us Christians in our religious beliefs, contrary to Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights."

;) ;)

And actually, inflation is a round-about form of taxation.

They didn't refuse it.  They forced the charity to refuse it by threatening to protest outside their offices (effectively a picket line).

The charity, I should add, should be ashamed of their action in listening to them, too.

It read: "As a result of contact from Christian Voice, Maggie's has taken the decision not to accept the proceeds from a special performance of Jerry Springer - The Opera."

Stephen Green, from Christian Voice, said the charity had made a decision to "honour the Christian faith", describing it as a "beacon of excellence".

"They were in grave risk of alienating Christian donors, their staff and cancer patients," he told Radio 4's Today programme.

He admitted his group threatened to protest outside the cancer charities' offices had they accepted the donation.

And the charity was swayed...
Like I said, I may not agree, but they were well within their rights to do it. Its the same (in principle) as when a group protests outside the Parliment cause they invited Bush over, or something of that sort.

edit: yeah, got a little mixed up there. My bad.,

But they weren't sticking to their guns, or refusing on the basis of their own beliefs - they were being pressured into it by another.  Cancer doesn't discriminate between religions, after all.

And they should be ashamed of that; but it's not like they chose to do so out of their own conscience, they did so under a threat.  That is a morally repugnant thing (for Christian Voice to do).
