My paycheck is barely 5 hours old and already I've bought KOTOR...the question is where do I put it.  I probably have to delete some music and archive my fansubs...

But to the point, any non-spoiler tips for me?

Do all the side-quests. Not only does it advance the story and makes for a richer experience, but it also makes things easier later on, because you've leveled more than you would by sticking to the bare minimum.

I'm actually replaying KOTOR right now, in preparation for KOTOR2. I'm about half-way through and steadily drifting towards the dark side (that's intentional, last time through I was light-side)

I was expecting stuff like class recomendations and semi-spoilerish things.

I don't like Jedi Consular and Scoundrel, as they are fairly week in combat with not enough of a boost to counter it. I'd suggest some combination of the other four.

No it´s not. Unlike KOTOR 1, here you have several caracters that come fully prepped for computer use and security. Infact, there are at least 3 of them that come with 20+ skill points in comp use, like Bao-dur and Atton. Put those points in something that the others don´t have, like "persuade" points. You won´t need comp use, ever! Besides, if you need to open something, you can simply equip one of those new uber implants, that grant you 6 or more points in every category.

I think KOTOR 2 is way too easy. Much easier than the first. I suggest you play in "hard", or it will be over before you know it.
I´m on the last leg of the game myself, just a few more kills and it´s game over for me. I just got sidetracked playing X2: Threat.

No Freespace 3 ?!? Oh, bugger...

I think Lib meant he bought KotOR 1 from his post, not KotOR 2.

Understand, I have much upgrading to do to this poor overworked box in the coming months before I am capable of playing KOTOR2 or Doom3(i have too, I just have too), nevermind finishing HW2(a legit version this time) and some of the other games I haven't played because of no money or not meeting sys recs.

I picked KOTOR up for $19.99, BTW.

Blasters are your friend until you have a lightsaber. Two pistols and Rapid Shot give good results, but remember to stay away from the baddies. If they get up in your face, switch to a melee weapon, blasters take a penalty at that range and Rapid Shot lowers your defense slightly. Two-Weapon Fighting and its improvement feats will also serve you well. Don't buy more then two ore three ranged weapon feats, however: they won't be so useful later on.

One you get a lightsaber and Jedi Defense, though, stick with that. Lots of points into dexterity will serve you well, particularly if you go for two lightsabers or a double-bladed one. Some of the powers are restricted by armor (a carryover from the D&D origins of the game rules, and stupid, IMO, but it's there) so stick to the Jedi clothing type of stuff. Buy the upgraded lightsaber proficency feats as soon as you can, and the lightsaber throw power too.

KOTOR2 has the same system requirements as KOTOR1 since they're using the same engine and KOTOR2 only has some minor improvements graphics wise. (slightly higher polygon count major NPCs and weather effects)

Semi-spoiler: If you haven't figured out KOTOR1's plot twist by the time the roll up text is done, you should be sterilized :p It's about as subtle as Bhaal's holy symbol being plastered all over the Baldur's Gate cover to make us pretend that we have no idea that our orphan character is a Bhaalspawn...

Oddly enough though it seems most people haven't figured this out about Bioware games.

Actually KOTOR2 uses the same engine as KOTOR, so if you can run the first on your current setup, you can also run the second.

As for semi-spoilerish stuff....hmm. Well, designate one party member (Jedi) to be a droid-killer, then give him the appropriate skills/force powers. Normal droids are a breeze, but when you run into some of the heavier ones, especially shielded, all your normal weapons (lightsaber included) are pretty much useless, so your best bet is the anti-droid force power.

Did you party?  I assumed that this was a single character setup like NWN.

Nope. You can have a maximum of 3 party members active at any one time, yourself and two others. There are a total of 9 party members that you meet throughout the game, and you can switch between them instantly (except when in battle.)

I think I figured out a way to move my install of Renegade so that I can still play that while I work through KOTOR, this means that i can start KOTOR before I get a newer, bigger HD.

Well, I have my initial feelings after having played for about 3.5 hours.

The story feels...rushed...somehow, I'm not really sure what exactly is going on yet, just that I have to rescue some Jedi babe named Bastilla.  The annoying "Fed Ex" type quests are missing for the most part, which is a bummer since those type quests are useful early on to allow new players to assimilate into the play style.

As far as game play goes it feels like a port from a console, but it's intentional since it was multi-platform release.  I'd still like it better if I could play it from a NWN type perspective, trying to drive with the WASD keys is mushy at best.

Load times are also quite decent.  Most areas load in 5-8 seconds on my Athlon XP 1800+.

My biggest complaint is the voice acting.  Bits of it are adequate.  But overall the VAs speak too fast to pronounce the words properly and get the right emotion into their voice.

It performs decently on my system, it's playable at about 12 or 13 fps, but it will be nicer when i upgrade.

I do not understand, however, how it won so many game of the year awards with such glaring flaws.

You're not in the story at all yet. The main story doesn't begin until Dantooine.  The graphics trump NWN fairly easily, and the WASD style of movement seems quite natural after a bit. Also, never really noticed any problems with the voice actors when I played through, with the exception of Carth and Mission being incredibly annoying.
