I use a Power 5.  And a pair of Z80s.  I have no time for Intel or AMD.

Athlon 32-Bit. I am however in a sticky wicket - my memory runs at 400, which screws up the bus factor for my processor meaning instead of running at 2.01GHz as an Athlon 2400 should, it runs at ~1.5GHz.

So faster memory, but slower chip. I have to pat myself on the back for this wonderful configuration.

Is there some reason you don't just run your memory slower?

Was running an AMD 2600+ about a month ago, but then that computer died and I've since gone over to an Intel 2.8GHz chip.

I have to say I've had no problems with either. Although I do have slightly more RAM in this new machine so overall performance has been better.

I have to say, this new Intel machine has been steady as a rock. No complaints at all. That said, I honestly don't believe there's an awful lot in it these days - a beefy processor is a beefy processor regardless of whether it's AMD or Intel.

prefer? really, I don't have preferences towards any of them, really. amd was cheaper back when I bought my w/s system, so I went with that back then. cash is king, and all that.

I'm writing this on a VIA powered comp. it's running on about 50 watts for the whole system (excluding monitor), which is really nice. :) downside would be performance, I guess, but since it's not much more than a "run irc and opera and instant messaging" machine, it doesn't matter too much. and it's really portable too - almost like a laptop, but it cost 1/4 of what a laptop does...

I've never built my own machine, but the only processors I've ever used were Intel, so I'd probably stick with them if I did build one.

AXP 2100+ (Tbred) running at 2400+ in this computer.

In the one I just built is an A64 3500+ (130nm, S939). If only it had internet access...

My comp is running on a pentium IV 2.6c ghz and is going along quite nicely although an upgrade of the video card would be nice.

The last Intel chip I bought was a Pentium 200 (note the lack of MMX). Since then I've stuck with AMD. They're cheaper and they do the same job at the cost of (generally) running hotter. When they stopped being pin-compatible, I made the choice to stay with AMD. I tend to migrate piecemeal, so when I upgrade my motherboard, I want it to take my current processor and memory, etc. I don't like the idea of having to change processors just to change my motherboard (like I would going to Intel now).
[I am not really here. This post is entirely a figment of your imagination.]

Athlon 64 3000+ on a VIA K8T800 Chipset.
Price has always been a factor for me, and AMD's been cheaper for the functionality I'm getting out of my machine.  Sooner or later I'll be able to make full use of my system with a 64 Bit OS.  Though, at work, all the machines I administer are Pentiums, and I have no problems until I have to sit down in front of the G3 and see why it puked up BSD code all over the screen.  does it at least once a day.
