A question for all the newbies...
This place seems sorta like a small town, everyone seems to have there little quirks about each other but otherwise flamewars are rare and civilized debate is common.

Um...  Swantz, that is not exactly how it is here.  The reason you see civil debate and very few flamewars is because most of the people took some of the real debates personally.  They either left the community, or they decided not to participate anymore.  Alot of good people left because of it, and now people are afraid to go into touchy subjects for that very reason.  But I suppose that's another story...  or thread :D.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

I know, but 5 figures isn't deserving of commas as much as when Steak and Raa pass 6 figures, in another 5 years or so. :p

I on the other hand did not find that in time. My beginning experiance was a wrather extremely rough one.
FS2 Mulit was dying and i was lead to HLP right before PXO died. That forced me to actually 'go to the site' i kept getting links in the lobby and games about.

My first post, yet topic, was about us getting off our butts and saveing fs and makeing fs&3. My speach was so inspirational it got the attention of every flame in the land of HLP. Sad to say iv paid for that mistake dearly. I now see what all is being done to perserve our precious game of Freespace.

Now'a'days, i beleive iv been accepted and that im no longer 'hated' or 'disliked' by any, or many members.
(anyone disagree? hehe)

HLP is a very good and close community, and it treats 'most' noobs well. Very well indeed. And i point to someones post about 'its not about the time but about the knoloage and wisdom you gain through this experiance here'.

One last thing. Because Cobra is my friend, i do ask you all to stop, lets say, 'picking on' him. Of the persentage of members negativly mentioned Cobra has been named about 90% of the time. Please show some restraint.

And a final note. Please excuse my horrible spelling and grammer.

I don't want to turn this into a "bash Cobra" thread, but I feel the need to explain this here.

We're not always just 'picking' on him. We're trying to correct him and fix him up. Compare the postcounts of, say, mine and Cobra's. I joined in 2002, and I just passed 2000 posts this month. Cobra joined in late 2004, and already has more than I do.

Why? Cobra spams and often posts just for the sake of posting. Honestly, a lot of the questions he asks are easily solvable by simply pressing "Search" and entering in the words he needs, but it seems like everyday there's a new thread or post with a question/comment that has been asked/said a hundred times before.

Factor this in with Cobra's natural tendency to take things too personally, and you'll understand.

Now, back to the thread... not Cobra bashing.

Who is this Cobra guy anyway? I was absent for quite some time recently and must have missed all the fun. I remember vadar_1 and an0n quite well, although I rather liked many of an0n's postings. Did he just leave or get banned again? (what was it, fourth time I think? :D)

Especially after the... um... incident... When he found out that HLP Admins linked to his site during The Great April Fools Day Prank (tm), and changed his homepage to reflect how he felt about the community.

A question for all the newbies...
Have I really been here since 2002? Damn...

I've always thought this community was really pretty close-knit. A lot of the people here have been around for a long time and there's a definite cast of characters... for the most part, everybody is decently good-natured most of the time. When I registered, people were pretty nice in directing me towards things and answering questions. The community's grown since then but things are more or less the same... just a little less colorful without an0n and Stryke.
Wash: This landing's gonna get pretty interesting.
Mal: Define "interesting".
Wash: *shrug* "Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die"?
Mal: This is the captain. We have a little problem with our entry sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then... explode.

But yeah, things are a lot less colorful without an0n around. :)
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

Not much information in that thread, although it's been a while since I saw some of those guys and heard the name "Thunder" around here. :D

The search comes up with all kinds of irrelevant junk; don't have time to sift through all that. I'll assume he is just another of the infamous characters we have had around here over the last few years.

IIRC an0n started insulting a few admins (I believe Setekh was a target) and in retaliation saved and uploaded many staff forum threads. So he's now indefinitely banned.
