Last time I looked at Dell LCDs they had a refresh >16ms. I ended up with a 19" Hyundai with an 8ms refresh.

I just wish I could convince the monitor to tell windows when I rotate the screen and automatically switch to portrait mode.

It's not that huge actually. Quite big, but not totally gigantic. Sort of like a 20" 4:3 monitor but with a little over 1.5 extra inches added on to either horizontal side. I was considering getting one myself a few months ago until I saw it in person, as they recently upgraded most of the monitors where I work and the division chief got one in his office. It's great for text and general windows usage, but somewhat unimpressive with graphics and motion. The main advantages are the big size and the built in card reader.

Considering I don't own, and never plan on owning, a TV, would you think much of a 24" TV? No, didn't think so. ;)

Watching movies, graphic design, seing my digital photos in almost full resolution (5 megapixels = 2592x1944), being uber-geeky, etc. :D

As for the response rate of the 2405, it's listed at 12ms, but the Samsung panel is listed at 8ms. Whatever - either way, it's fast enough for me... my GFX card certainly can't keep up in games with high details. :p :(

Windowblinds, I think, will let you maximize height, without doing width.

I've never found anything that lets you tile windows effectively on large monitors, unfortunately. What would rock is a program that let you see a virtual monitor with a realtime window footpritns that you could manipulate. Grab the edge between a pair of windows and drag it and it would resize both windows on the desktop accordingly. Naturally it would not display modal windows or other non-resizable items.

I can actually still see a bit of ghosting on 8ms panels in fast paced games, stuff like UT2004. They work well with slower games. One problem though is that every 8ms LCD I have seen uses a 6-bit TN panel and these look significantly worse than the 8-bit ones, especially with dark gradients. The manufacturers also tend to cheat and make up their own definitions so that they can quote smaller response times.

Anyway, I was actually referring to the refresh rate there. The Dells are only capable of 60hz/fps, which is a little low for some types of games, while there are some others out there that support a much better 75hz. I think some of the Samsung LCDs can do 75 at their native resolutions.

I guess one useful thing to be able to do is to tile the windows with a single command, so that you can have two things open side by side, but I haven't seen any third party program that does this. The "tile windows" taskbar menu commands do all sorts of strange stuff except what they are supposed to do. :p

Sandwich, does that model have the slight light bleed issue my 20" wide  Dell 2005fpw has? I have a very slight bleed on all four corners which doesn't bug me at all since i rarely have all black imagery on screen.

The annoying thing about widescreen resolutions is finding ways to run games on it without it being stretched out of proportion. I found this site to be quite usefull in this matter: http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum/

Of course nothing beats an Apple 30 inch Cinema Display or connecting a compatible video card to a 60 inch LCD rare projection DLP HDTV. :)

There's an easy way to play games, run them in a window if they will, otherwise set your video card to central output. However, I know many  wouldn't like having a huge box either way when they play games.
