I have a few things to say about the fighter and the contest in general:

That thing is ****ing amazing. I thought that this was the sort of level that all the models would be at, but judging by some of the entries (no offence) I think I shoulda entered (my recent models are 20 minute knock offs).

Are you sure there are only 12 maps there?. The textures are as perfect as I have ever seen on a non-movie render, but saying that, I've seen plenty of movie with graphics that weren't even half that quality.

Definitely a winner in my opinion.

Those maps could very well be 10 megs apiece.  and when you start to add all kinds of effects like bump, reflections, etc etc, things get very realistic.

Hmmm I see problems on any thread where the subject of "donkey slang names" comes up. Consider for a moment that someone suggests the word ***  as an appropriate choice for a well known donkey slang name, they would certainly be in trouble because as is evident the word ***  cannot be seen and merely is shown as ***. Also consider that "asterix, asterix, asterix" is not a commonly known slang title for a donkey and indeed would confuse persons attempting to learn donkey slang titles for educational purposes.

Scenario: Little Jimmy is 7 years old, he is currently in class and the teacher asks him "Jimmy do you know any other names for a donkey?". Jimmy, being a regular at the HLP boards and remembering a discussion involving donkey slang names offers the answer "asterix, asterix, asterix". The teacher promptly phones his parents, a local shrink and a priest who all determine that he has mental problems and cannot be allowed to hold a senior position in any large multinational company in the future.
Jimmy's life is irrepairably damaged due to the fact that he was unaware that the HLP boards had selective filtering and that the word ***  appears like this: ***

Just notice that 14 hours of modelling is a long time. You must work several days on it, work on modelling full time, give up sleeping or have no social life at all to be able to do that kind of model...

Just think about how much time you work straight on at any given time for your free time projects (I was never able to work much more than half an hour a day...).
Probably away. Contact through email.

At that rate, such a model would take about a month to complete.

Actually, that is for all the animations I did with it, texturing, and modeling...

took about two days to model and texture...and not much time at all to set up the animations...(You can see one of em at my site)
I let the animations render out while I was sleeping :P

so it just took a few days all together...figure about 3 or 4 hours to model...modeled in one day...incedentally, a couple days after that I created a bomber version, took even less time.

It is basically just a cylindar, beveled a lot at both ends...maybe 15 minutes to make the central fuselage...stuck a sphere on the front of it, and a cylindar with a slope inwards and a flate plane on the inside for the engines...(All of the details is done with textures on the engines, I should post a pic of the model with no textures)
Then a hollowed out sylindar beveled at both ends, extruded to one side for the weapons pod, and extruded and beveled to the other for the wing.
Select the front panel of the weapons pod, quad devide it, select a couple fo the outer faces, bevel in slightly, meta quad devide those a couple times, and bevel em out and then bakc in for the weapons...

Really very simple...
What took the longest was the rotating targeting reticle on the outside of the bubble. All I did was create a sphere, boolean subtract the peices of it I didn't want, extruded the whole thing, to give it depth, a good half hour or 45 minutes of work there.
The texturing was done quick also, basic metallic texures for everything, but the wing, the wing is basically a big metallic image matte with numbers painted on it, and then autosized to the wing.

I might have been generous giving it 14 hours, but I built it really fast and a long time ago,  so I don't relaly remember. But I know it wasn't long. Just a little weekend project to build the two ships.

when I put that class together for people who want to learn lightwave, we might build the podfighter as the project.

Incedentally, the cockpit took the least amount of time. THe inside is mapped with a black textures with some colored squares, and a luminosity value, and the seat setup is just an old mesh of mine of the aliens powerloader, with a few parts removed.

what took the longest was rendering it out with full reflections and refractions, since the cockpit is all glass, and I wanted it to have the properties of glass.

As you can see, it is all basic shapes, with inward and outward bevels at good locations...very easy to model in this style...since to bevel a surface, you just select it, hit 'b' move the mouse, hit 'b' twice, move the mouse again, hit 'b' twiec move the mouse again, then you have a series of three bevels already...once oyu make your cylindar, bevels take seconds to do.

and extrusion is almsot as simple, select the side of the cylindar, hit shift-'e', pull it out to where you want it, delete the internal extra polys, flip the new polys, merge points, and you have the first section of the weapons pod. do that a couple times, you get that shape, bevel the front of it a bit, with some devides, and you got guns and vents.

I have found that modeling well, does't have to mean complicated. As long as ti si clean, and you keep an aesthetic value running, know where to put the lights, what panels, what shapes.

Someone once told me that it doesn't matter how good a model is, textures are what really make the difference between a good model and an excellent model. Lucily you seem to have hit the nail right on the head with this one.
