So "Rita"s on its way to Houston, and is expected to be a CAT 4 by the time it hits... i.e. comparable to Katrina.  Obviously it won't inflict as much damage as it did to New Orleans, the primary reason being that our city is above sea level....... but still.

i filled up the gas tank of both cars today, my parents are doing the same with their cars.  we're parking in an empty parking lot on friday night onward, cause our neighborhood has too many trees and such.  in addition i'm filling up our hot tub to have enough water to flush toilets, cause when Allison came through a few years ago, we went without electricity for 2 weeks plus, and that didn't even do noticeable damage to our neighborhood!  because all the power lines here are above ground, it just takes one tree to fall over...

also, we're filling up everything we have with water.  our water comes from a well, so when electricity goes out, so does our water supply.  big chance they may call to evacuate, and if they do, we're in serious trouble.  for one, we've still got thousands and thousands of refugees from Katrina's destruction (mostly people from New Orleans) in our city, a lot of them still in the Astrodome...

i'm kind of panicking.  i'm giving all of senior management (they're all evacuating to different places over the weekend) an external hard drive, sealed in a thick plastic bag, with all the company's data and information on it (encrypted), just in case.  i'm also covering all the servers with a tarp, bringing in everyone's PCs to the server room, and covering them too.

so yeah.  i'm praying that it'll turn its course.

If it looks like trouble, get out before everyone else gets the same idea. You don't want to take chances, especially after we all saw what Katrina did.

I 'like' how the guy writing for the Interdictor, who got trapped in the company's offices (they had generator power, supplies, etc). said that he'd be moving out of New Orleans... either to Florida or California. Wow. Such safe locations.

Anyway, good luck to ya, man... never underestimate the sustaining power of chalva to keep you going when all else is gone (and to rot your teeth, probably). ;)

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

If I were you...I'd be getting the heck out of dodge.  Find some family or friends somewhere else and crash for at least the duration of the storm...

Good luck to you.  This is going to be a bad one from the looks of it!

Yeah people can be downright retarded when given the oppertunity.  I'm worried about people putting a run on gas supplies here already, and it hasn't even hit anything yet.

And you do realize it's either .30-06 or "Thirty aught six", right?  As in .30 caliber rifle using ammunition adopted as Army standard in 1906.
