Re: Search Feature Broken?
They're having SQL server issues or something along those lines, so its disabled.

Re: Search Feature Broken?
Search is taking too long with its SQL-queries and for some reason also stalling all other SQL-queries until search is completed. Until the problem is fixed, search must be disabled. If you're looking for an old pre-move post or thread, please go to our old vBulletin forums via the "Archived vB" link at the top, right below latest member. The old forums have all posts pre-indexed and new posts disabled, so search should be very fast there. And even if the search should take longer than usual, it shouldn't affect this forum. Hopefully. :nervous:

Re: Search Feature Broken?
Question: What type of search is being executed? Does SMF use the standard MySQL way of searching or does it use FULLTEXT? The latter speeds things up, lots, IF you can get it to work (which isn't easy, I can tell you).

Re: Search Feature Broken?
SMF 1.0 does not index the text of posts in any way. It uses MySQL's search, AFAIK. SMF 1.1 does include a number of indexing options, however. We will definitely be upgrading to 1.1 when it is released (currently in Release Candidate 1), and quite possibly sooner, if our tests of RC1 elsewhere prove it to be stable enough for us.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

Re: Search Feature Broken?
It's been 2 months already...I don't know anything about this subject, but isn't there another way to run the search thing?  Maybe use Linux (I think I remember reading somewhere that you were using Windows) instead?  Of course, I'm sure the people who know what they're doing have already thought of all possible options... but if it was Windows, and it was a Windows issue, then I'd say you could probably get them to help you fix the problem, right?   I don't know   I'm just hoping whoever is doing whatever to fix this, that he gets done soon!!  It'll be great!.
PS maybe you could put a request for help if there's people out there in the HLP universe that know how to fix those kind of things (if you need help, that is).

Re: Search Feature Broken?
The problem with search is one with the way the board database handles the search operation, and has absolutely nothing to do with the OS that it's running on.  The reason it isn't fixed yet is that the version of the board system that will allow search in reasonable time hasn't been released yet, so be patient.

So will all the threads have "New" stuck next to them unless you've clicked on it and it hasn't been replied to since?

That's what "new" suggests. ;) If that annoys you, just use the "Mark Read" button on the front page of the forum when you're done flicking through, it's just above the Info Center on the right.

Meh, I won't click that until I've gone through most recent threads but yes, pretty much every page is "new"

Yeah, this is brilliant. At last we can say "search n00b" and it means something. :)

Re: Search Feature Broken?
Technically, it was never broken. It's just that SMF 1.0's search method was very ineffective in forums that have huge number of posts. SMF 1.1 does have many improvements for huge forums such as HLP. That's right kids, over 750k posts is nothing to shrug about.
