The ads you see on HLP mainpage, forums, etc, are all text ads. No pop-up ads, no images, no flash. As most of you are using Firefox and adblock or equivalent, we would like to ask you not to block ads on hard-light.net. We need to pay for the server's monthly fee after all, and all the extra that does not go to paying the monthly fee, will be saved for rainy days. Click an ad or two a day if you feel like it. :)

well, sure I could buy that. but even if it's got text on it, it's not automagically a text ad:

It's not an ad. :p It is a hit counter. Which I hope will be removed because of Google Analytics and Webalizer.

Semantics, I don't like it any more than you do. Sandwich likes the statistics it gives, but now that we're using both webalizer and google analytics, I hope Sandwich will find them to be sufficient and removes the annoying alexa hit counter.

"duck test". If it looks like an ad, and behaves like an ad, it's most definitely a duck.

Well, so long as it's a duck and not an ad...

Yes, it has been known for that. Don't click on that image - it doesn't do HLP any good. :p I've yet to check out the other hit tracking systems we have, so I haven't removed the HitsLink thing (the Alexa image) yet.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

I have a question. Why exactly did we move away from GameSpy?
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

I am not sure if they are what I think they are, or if they are something else.
