HMS Daring launched today
I know ngtm1r and a few others will be interested in this:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/4667132.stm

HMS Daring, the first of the new Type 45 heavy destroyers, is launched this afternoon. They will come into service starting in 2009, and will replace the aging Type 42 class, which have been in service since the late 1960s. They will be the biggest non-capital warships in the Royal Navy since the Tiger-class missile cruisers of the 1950s.

I'm quite amused by the insistence of alliterative ship names; HMS Dauntless, Daring, Diamond, Defender, Dragon and......... Duncan.  Seriously, you'd think they'd have a better 'D' word for it; it's not something to send the enemy quaking in their boots, facing down the Duncan.

(at least it's name after a Scot, I suppose)

Nothing wrong with Duncan. At least its better than Destructer, Death-bringer, Doom or Dominator... Warship name doesnt have to be indimitatading...
I have as much respect for HMS Lollipop as I have for HMS Krush, Kill 'n Destroy

In a way it's good. The enemy would be so busy laughing every time they thought of attacking the Lollipop that they would let it get into range and grind them to dust :D

What, like HMS Tickler, HMS Spanker, HMS Sappho, HMS Fairy, HMS Thruster, HMS Torrid, HMS Dwarf, HMS Doris, HMS Teaser, HMS Truant, HMS Insolent and HMS Pansy?

Well, I suppose it's better than HMS Surly and HMS Violent........

(all real names, BTW)

Anyway, the ship would look really cool; if it didn't have that giant lollipop sticking out of the top. Maybe they should've named it the Lollipop cause of that.

Batman was a proper military name at that time, though.  Er, not like Steve Batman, but as in the name of an officers assistant or something.

Defiant, Dismantler, Deadly or even Despotic to keep the Blairs happy, but Duncan!?

It's like cars, they used to have cool names like 'Tiger' or 'Mustang' or 'Manta' but now it's all stupid names like 'Ka' and 'Uno', I say un-castrate our car's names!

I will go down with this ship

Be happy you still get car names. In America, the trend is to have random number and letter combinations.

RSX, TSX, RL, TL, MDX, IS300, IS350, FX430, 325ci, 730i, etc.

Yes but how many women do you know that want to buy a car named after a beastie?
They're simply creating generic names aimed at the entire european market. Though the pinto 'episode' was funny. :)
