I think the fact that we couldn't get the forums restored right away kind of overshadowed the rest of it.  At the time, people were saying it was the best April Fool's ever.

T'was totally worth it. Only forum posts were lost, not any actual work. And all the people complaining .... this is a forum, on the internet, you're not paying for it. So you should be able to live without it for a while.

That's entirely missing the point. Having the forums go down for a day due to circumstances beyond our control is one thing, but having them become useless for a day on purpose is just a giant middle finger to the community. There's nothing funny about it.

Then the admins get all pissy about people not appreciating the genius wit of slapping a language filter plugin on the forums. How dare people actually value the ability to clearly communicate with each other... you know, the only reason they come here in the first place? So, given that language filters aren't amusing (unless you have the IQ of a football hooligan), and that they significantly hamper communication, next year the admins should just be honest with themselves and slap a ROT13 filter on the whole forum.
