Personally I would of preferred a fake new admin team announcement or something. With pictures from sports illustrated or something. So a bunch of new admins who are hot chicks.

And all the people complaining .... this is a forum, on the internet, you're not paying for it. So you should be able to live without it for a while.

That's entirely missing the point. Having the forums go down for a day due to circumstances beyond our control is one thing, but having them become useless for a day on purpose is just a giant middle finger to the community. There's nothing funny about it.

Then the admins get all pissy about people not appreciating the genius wit of slapping a language filter plugin on the forums. How dare people actually value the ability to clearly communicate with each other... you know, the only reason they come here in the first place? So, given that language filters aren't amusing (unless you have the IQ of a football hooligan), and that they significantly hamper communication, next year the admins should just be honest with themselves and slap a ROT13 filter on the whole forum.

Well, I found it hilarious. But then again, I think that generally a lot more of middle fingers should be shown to a lot of  people (to make the world a better place), but that's just IMO. Other people might think otherwise but they're wrong. That's another IMO.

I didn't see anything really wrong with it, being on a weekend, one day only, apparently the admins had confidence the forums could be restored without incident, and it was done in good, harmless fun.  One single day.  It's not like the admins owe anyone here "five nines".  I don't know about anyone else, but I was outside enjoying the first sunny weekend I've had in about three weeks.  It's much more annoying to me whenever they have to go down for mysterious "administration" issues, which only the in-the-know people really know why they'll be going down for a day or so.  As I said before, I would have preferred if it was limited to just the Hard-Light forum instead of it creeping down in the General Freespace/Campaigns forums, but it was gone in a day.  It's good to relax once in a while.

Regarding last year's april fools (since it was brought up, and the same sour apples (maybe remove the "s" from that) are still complaining): we don't make anyone come here, so if you want to complain about anything, go do so somewhere else. There's too little random power abuse by the Admins as it is, as far as I'm concerned. We could make a deal, though: you pay a monthly fee for forum access, and we (try to) make sure you won't be randomly abused. What about that?

'Tis indeed.  I'm not sure whether we deleted it or whether it got swept away with the rest of the attachments when we moved.
