Uh, who's the idiot in the quote in the first post?

And I'll celebrate by spreading news of the Freespace torrent far and wide!

April 4th, eh? Sounds good - put it on the calendar! Update the Wikipedia!! Heck, I envision that one day, Google themselves will have a Google Doodle for Freespace on this date!!!

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Re: International Freespace day!
This should be an international holiday.
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

(out of curiousity, why April 4?)
Wash: This landing's gonna get pretty interesting.
Mal: Define "interesting".
Wash: *shrug* "Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die"?
Mal: This is the captain. We have a little problem with our entry sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then... explode.

Re: International Freespace day!
So do we build a Freespace tree or something?  Should there be cake or turkey with all the stuffings?  Maybe fireworks, definetly fireworks.

Someone render some FS style fireworks already!

Let me assure you of one thing that you can go to sleep with tonite. I have FULL intentions of getting this license. If I DO get it, you and your teenny leetle friends on your Ferrous Oxide project, are effectively, shutdown because I don't piss around when it comes to IP properties. You would do well to ask around. I've sued publishers for less and I have attorneys around the world, literally on speed dial.

Now, I will leave you with that thought, as I retire for the evening.

You will eventually come to regret this day. Mark my words.

Re: International Freespace day!
Yes. Even though it is a completely different game, we will be able to make a mod of it for FS2 (assuming it is ever completed).

Re: International Freespace day!
Derek Smart's birthday should not be celebrated in any way even if it's just by having a holiday fall on the same day. April 4th should be a day of mourning for humanity until dear Derek's death. I propose we make FS1's release date the official Freespace day, or how about the day we got the source code. ;7

Y'know, maybe it shouldn't be so damn close to April 1st, previous experience has shown us the forums can be quite fux0red for the first few days of April... :nervous:

Re: International Freespace day!
It was more a joke than anything else simply because it was his birthday.

If we were to have an official FS holiday I think it should probably be on the game's offical release date or whenever the source was released.

Re: International Freespace day!
After thinking about this for a while, I think I've got a better idea. Instead of it being on DS's birthday, how about something more appropriate, such as the day the game was officially released, or the day when they released the source code?

Re: International Freespace day!
I'm all for it, but on the day the source was released. Then we can come up with arbitrary foods and beverages to celebrate it, and make available a paper cut-fold-and-paste thingie (how do you call them in english anyway?) of an Orion to act as christmas tree equivalent, and everyone shall rejoice.
Probably away. Contact through email.
