Nintendo's UK press outfit have just sent through a short movie, along with the following text:-

Introducing Wii.

As in “we.”

While the code-name “Revolution” expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer.

Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else.

Wii will put people more in touch with their games … and each other. But you’re probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like “we,” which emphasizes this console is for everyone.

Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

Wii has a distinctive “ii” spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play.

And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd.

So that’s Wii. But now Nintendo needs you.

Because, it’s really not about you or me.

It’s about Wii.

And together, Wii will change everything.

CONFIRMED: Nintendo Wii is the official new name for the Nintendo Revolution.

You can view the movie for yourself here:- http://www.rewiredmind.com/movies/logo.mov - You'll need QuickTime.

Nintendo have also updated the official site at http://revolution.nintendo.com/

What the hell possessed them to do that? Revoltuin was a pretty good name, it could represent both an uprising of new technology and the 'turning of the tables' on Sega and Sony....

Well, the 360 is kinda a revolution too. So it would be confusing having a console with similar names for some people... :p

I'll give them the benefit of doubt for now. It's a newish direction... I guess Wii will just have to wait and see. ;)

Can you imagine going into Game and saying 'I'd like a Wii please?'

Or if they released a smaller version; 'I'd like a wee Wii please'.

in america, you don't say 'wee' as any kind of euphemism for taking a piss, but still, its a stupid,
stupid name, one that only nintendo's completely inept management could possibly think of.

Hmmm, strange, allthough it really seams there is more to this name then they are telling us. So I call a wait and see.

Perhaps they're trying to imply that it will piss on the competition :)

Exactly what I was thinking.

Re: Nindendo marketing strangles Revolution at birth
It's so whenever the competition brings out something new they can just sniff and say "Wii are not ammused."

Sorry, the piss joke was taken. This was all thats left.

Yep, and they will probley let this fester until E3. I read one guys comments about how this has made the gaming world stop and go "huh". So, I would say, they did exactly what they wanted to do.

No, it's actually fairly common (if childlike) vernacular. And "wee-wee" is slang for penis (with the connotation that it's a small one).

Anyway, the "Wii" spelling is flat-out turbocharged retardation--

There are no "ii" words in English. Not common ones, anyway. Looks like something from one of those freaky eastern-european languages, or Welsh.

I have no doubt that people will pronounce it as "Why". In fact, I will predict right now many headlines reading "Why Wii?".

If you capitalize it (WII), it looks like "W2", whatever that is.

It looks like someone mistyped "Wiki", or "Wifi".

I say, since the controller can track hand movement, they should just call it the Kinematic Nintendo Entertainment System. Yeah that's right-- the "knees".

You know, I think I've got it, it's the Nintendo Wave. Notice when it starts up it shows the controler, then it shows a shooting scene, then playing pingpong. Then at the last part, the two i's wave at you, you need your wrist to do all those things. It is really pointing at a hands on experience. ;)

Wii, could also stand for some kind of wrist related interface.
