Meh, don't worry I wasn't trying to criticise your opinion of the UK. Heck I don't like it and I'm supposed to be all patriotic right?
Personally I think our country needs some new history. Sure we have the Tower of London and Big Ben and Stonehenge and what have you but they're old. We need something new.. a step into the future. The Dome could've been it but it failed miserably. Something that says "not only do we have a diverse history, but we're innovating even now".
But we aren't.
Pffff. The last thing a beautiful country like England needs is more modernist atrocities. The reason I hate modern architecture is because the cool, new modern skyscrapers in London look exactly the same as the ones in Madrid, Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Atlanta and Dubai. It's not English if it has no distinctive features. When I walk down the streets of London, I want to know I'm in London. When I walk down the streets of Dubai, I want to know without a shadow of a doubt that I'm in an Arab country, not San Francisco with darker-skinned people.
I have nothing against innovation, except that the form it's taking is to make the entire world into a monoculture. The actual manifestation of progress has been to erase whatever is unique and beautiful about a place, in favour of a single, modern standard which incidentally isn't beautiful anywhere, much less everywhere.
